Diverting but not very in depth, and a bit too stream-of-consciousness to be of much use as local history. The illustrations are, however, mostly well-chosen and captioned. Of note: although Southwick manages to put a name to the first female mayor, African-Americans whose elections were firsts remain anonymous in a way that would have been odd even in 1998, and his remarks on various ethnic groups have a tendency to run right up to the line.
