About the Author

Peter Edward Spier was born in Amsterdam on June 6, 1927. His formal education ended in his early teens, about a year after the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940. His father was imprisoned by the Nazis for an illustration of Hitler that speculated about what would have happened had he stayed a mostrar mais painter. Since the family was Jewish, they were all sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslovakia. They were liberated by the Soviet Red Army in May 1945. Spier returned to the Netherlands after the war and served in the Royal Netherlands Navy for four years before immigrating to the United States in 1951. He worked in advertising before he began to write and illustrate children's books. His books included The Cow Who Fell in the Canal by Phyllis Krasilovsky, The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night, Of Dikes and Windmills, and Circus! He received the Caldecott Medal for Noah's Ark. He died of congestive heart failure on April 27, 2017 at the age of 89. (Bowker Author Biography) mostrar menos

I'm surprised the illustrations in this pictureless book have aged as well as they did. The cars are a bit outdated. Most homes today would have a dishwasher full of dishes rather than a sink full. The old Electrolux barrel canister vacuum will be foreign to most youngsters. Still I think it would be fun to take this one to see what story my oldest great nephew tells as he looks at the illustrations.

2023 - In search of good homeschooling books

by Peter Spier (1987) 48 pages.

This would definitely get the job done, but it may not be the best. It is an oversized book, colorful and full of art.

It begins with a map of early America, 1787. Then 4 pages of history on how the states finally came together in national unity under the U.S. Constitution as one nation. Good stuff!

At the back of the book, are the signatures and photos of each of the signers of the Constitution. Then 6 pages of the tiniest font of the U.S. Constitution, word for word. And a copy of the original U.S. Constitution is also included.

Where this book fails is the 24 pages of artwork on the many jobs and facets of America, then and now. Why not, instead, break down the Constitution so the kids (and adults) can understand what it means instead of all that artwork? I have learned that Peter Spier is all about his art and less about the story.

In my opinion, this book falls a bit short. I’ll keep looking.

2023 - ‘70’s Immersion Reading Challenge

Noah’s Ark by Peter Spier (1977 1st ed.) 40 pages.

Okay, so now I know the author, Peter Spier, is more of an illustrated children’s artist more than writer. This book contains one page of writing, which is a translated Dutch poem called The Flood written by Jacobus Revius (1586-1658). Although the poem is nice, and the artwork is intense and interesting, giving a child a lot to look over, these kinds of books just aren’t my cup of tea. I can't really rate this kind of book. I'm not a child.… (mais)

Originally published in 1982.

WTH? A wordless book. I don’t care for this “style” at all. But then again, I'm not a child; therefore, I can't really rate this book.
