Sometimes roaringly funny, more often plain silly, and lighter than air.

Clearly an excellent writer. But I don't care one whit about any of the (pathetic) characters, not even Patrick Melrose himself. I've given it a go, but think my life's too short for this set.

Here's what I wrote in 2012 about reading this set of books: "Four predecessor novels to "At Last". More background on the hero. Continued to provide a window into the world of the super-rich English, but St. Aubyn's brainy humor came through better with more reading. Tragi-comic." Now in 2023 I learn that the Edward St. Aubyn continued to write but the world, as seen through his interviewers, seems to be most interesting in, and fastinated by, this autobiographical series; that's probably a shame for him. Oh, an St. Aubryn is not just "super-rich"; he is of the highest English class with impeccable lineage. "Privileged" is the term were use today and he is very much so. Here's what I wrote in 2012 about this read: "Somewhat distriburbing view into the world of the really rich English, and certainly a reminder of the risks of idleness and self-absorption.". Still disturbed by the experiences of the protagonist, in his childhood (such a victim) and yet when he was an adult, too (the playout of childhood trauma). Note that the quotations in the comments section are from Amazon kindle highlights made at the time of reading.
