Manet: Portraying Life por MaryAnne Stevens
This is a book about Manet's relationship with the Parisian Modernism of the late 1800's. It illustrates how his hallmark deployment of the enigmatic is prompted by his deliberate mixing of genre types and his deployment of modern symbols such as fashion, music and industry (informed by the work of his colleague Baudelaire). The book is also very illuminating on the influence of photography on Manet's work and his relationships with his models. catalog of a very good exhibition I saw at the Royal Academy of Art March 15, 2013. Has versions of several of Manet's best known works and a lot more of his pictures as well as materials on his life, photos of his friends and places he lived etc.
Being essays describing and plates illustrating the output of members of the Royal Academy during the reign of good old Victoria. The book also contains some material of use for reference. The art represents some good examples of studio painting from the period; the big names are underrepresented, so it's a good chance to discover some unsung artists of talent.
In Art at the Crossroads the dimension of art at the turn of the century is discussed in depth ans satisfactorily. "Die Lebensreform (publ. 2001)" is congrent with this volume regarding art matters, but it covers a much wider range of changes in the human mind and in human society around 1900.
