Alana Stewart

This was a book I had heard nothing about. I was interested in looking at this since books on Farrah, surprisingly, aren’t numerous. Sadly, this book is more about the author’s own self promotion than about Farrah. My Journey with Farrah is probably the worst book biography I’ve read since Chris Farley was done in by this friends and family in something called The Chris Farley Show, and the Bob Woodward’s horrendous book on John Belushi, Wired. I do not recommend this book at all. The author knows nothing about medicine, is into New Age therapies, consuls Marianne Williamson like a goddess of truth, shows constant disregard for the actual physical body of her supposed friend (Farrah) who has cancer. Then on top of that there is the dangerous subversion she perpetrates by playing doctors against doctors against other doctors. Farah according to the book started off at UCLA Westwood, then went to a wellness clinic in near Bad Tolz, Germany then went to City of Hope (Los Angeles) at the instance of the author because “someone needed to advocate for her (Farrah).” I have never heard of anyone traveling as much as Farah did while battling cancer. The travel was surely a contributing factor to her body not responding to treatments and the level of fatigue she endured to have people tell the “friend” a cure was on the way. I was actually feeling sick while reading this. I gained much respect for Farrah, third hand of course, but she worked for with it. With friends like Farrah’s, who needs enemies? Then there’s the whole documentary being filmed for ET of Farrah’s ordeal being credited to the author. What? Are you kidding me? I hope I never meeting the author in person because I’m never read anything bad about Farrah but this woman, (Alana Stewart, former wife of George Hamilton and Rod Stewart) sure makes me question Farrah’s judgment. Ryan O’Neil was in and out of the picture, living his own best life. The good things about the book, there was only a little, was the religiosity of Farrah all her life. Farrah was raised Catholic and never left. She loved to pray, and she said that she felt most at home in mediation. Mediative prayer (not transcendental) is something that Catholics rarely speak about but is the centerpiece of the devotional practices. It is the creation of inward peace to have a clear mind and heart when decisions are to be made. It is a preparation for the future based on God’s presence today. Farah is said to have often prayed the rosary, and said grace before meals, and enjoyed visiting churches to briefly pray. She loved Mexican food and favored El Cholo, Santa Monica which is pretty good. Farrah is buried in Westwood, Calif. She was 62 when she died. She had a private service prior at the Los Angeles Catholic Cathedral. I have visited her graveside several times. It lays in a plot across the grass from Marilyn Monroe's above ground vault. This was a fast read and I enjoyed the book. Many of the negative comments about the book were towards Alana complaining - are you kidding me? If you have never had the responsibility of caring for someone at the end stage of cancer then you cannot understand the physical and mental toll it has on you. It's hard enough on you and your family when treatment is local but when you are flying to another country constantly - I can't imagine what that is like.

I thought Alana was open and honest about everything, her feelings and her struggles - not only with dealing with Farrah's illness but her own problems at the same time, I could feel her pain through her words.

To me, the disappointment was in her doctors in Germany, at the time of her reoccurance no one has ever been cured of this disease and to tell her they would always be honest with her - did she know this from the beginning because the book did not indicate that. If so, then her choices to endure what she did were her own for she sure did not have any quality of life those two years she went through of treatment. If she did not, then shame on them because to me she was nothing but a guinea pig.

I am glad Farrah is at peace now and her suffering is over. Also, I feel there should have been some more information on the type of cancer she had because of its rarity.… (mais)

I read this book in just a few hours. I couldn't put it down. I've been a Farrah Fawcett fan since I was a young girl, but I've recently become a fan of Alana Stewart as well. I have two books to read written by Alana and this was the first one I received. I devoured it. I love the way Alana writes and I can hardly wait to read the next book - her autobiography! This book, written in series of journal entries, opened my eyes to how powerful a friendship between women can be. The book made me smile, made me cry, inspired me, and made me think a lot about how life can change in literally seconds. Farrah and Alana were blessed to have found each other. Nothing, not even death, can take that from them.… (mais)
