Raman Sukumar is a Professor of Ecology at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, India. He is also Chair of the Asian Elephant Specialist Group of IUCN (World Conservation Union), and Honorary Director of the Asian Elephant Research and Conservation Centre at Bangalore. An erudite, wide-ranging, and opulently illustrated book on the Elephant (Elephas) in the subcontinent, and peripherally in other parts of Asia like Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The author has delved into all the old literature and culled out examples from all the arts available. A bonus is the profusion of full-page reproductions from the Mughal and other paintings. The last chapter on the ecology and conservation of current populations is a welcome addition, but one would wish for more on this aspect, given the author's long experience in thee field.
