Maria Edgeworth and Florence Montgomery were cousins. In 1836, she visited Bavaria, where she met Cajetan Josef Friedrich, Baron von Tautphoeus, a chamberlain and counselor to the king of Bavaria. The couple married in 1838, making her Baroness von Tautphoeus, and had a son. She wrote four novels describing South German life, manners and history described as "combinations of romance and travelogue." Her first book, The Initials (1850) was highly popular; it was followed by Cyrilla (1853), The Quits (1857), and At Odds (1863).
