About the Author

Steven C. Tracy is a professor of Afro-American studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Chu Tian Scholar at Central China Normal University and is the author of Langston Hughes and the Blues and Going to Cincinnati: A History of the Blues in the Queen City.

This is a very valuable addition to blues literature. I grew up in Cincinnati, and had no idea the city had a blues tradition. This may say more about me (specifically me as a young 'un) than it does about anything else. Also, I didn't start really digging the blues until my mid 20s.

Still, there *was* (even is) an important blues scene in Cincinnati, OH and Steve Tracy does his homework and tells you all about it. The city is perhaps better known for its bluegrass -- Cincinnati being a kind of Appalachian mecca -- but there are some really interesting blues figures: the Document Records CD "Rare Country Blues Vol 3 1928 – 1936" has tracks by many of these artists, if you can find it.… (mais)
