Synergy: Black Seminole People

The Black Seminole people are the descendants of Seminole Indians combined with free Blacks and escaped enslaved people of African lineage. Although Florida had been a refuge for freedom-seeking enslaved people, the Black Seminole people ultimately migrated to Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico in the mid 1800s.

A MAN CALLED HORSE by Glennette Tilley Turner tells the true story of a man of Seminole and African descent who lead his people from Florida to a new home in the West during the 19th century. This well-researched biography reflects the many roles of John Horse from counselor and army captain to conductor on the Underground Railroad. Told through short, visually-rich chapters, Turner follows John Horse’s quest while also providing the larger context of the challenges facing the Black Seminole people. The book concludes with the lasting legacy, additional information, timeline, author’s note, notes, and bibliography.

Glennette did a grat job portraying Harriet Tubman’s perspective of life. Harritet grew up a slave working on different plantations and her favorite thing to do was pick the apples; she was curious to know how the apples tasted. One day she bite into one and was harshly punished and that was the day Harriet knew she wanted to be free. She ran away from the planation to a safe house where Underground Railroad members helped her and other slaves find freedom. From there on out Harriet worked to help free slaves using the Underground Railroad and made the apples the symbol of freedom. She even bought a house in Auburn, New york where she planted rows of apple trees and let everyone pick their own. The illustrations in this book are so vivid and brought Tubman’s experiences to life.… (mais)

Turner has written a very user-friendly book in a question-and-answer format perfect for teaching students about the time period, people involved, and issues of the day. Turner also included maps, photos, and original source material. The annotated bibliography makes a great starting point for further research.
