Violette Verdy was the stage name of Nelly Armande Guillerm, born in Pont-l'Abbé, France. Her father Renan Guillerm died when she was only a few months old. She began ballet training at age eight. In 1942, during the German Occupation of France in World War II, her mother Jeanne took her to Paris to find the best teachers. There she studied with Carlotta Zambelli, Madame Rousanne Sarkissian, and Victor Gsovsky. In 1945, she made her professional debut in the corps de ballet in Roland Petit's ballet Le Poète. Soon afterward, she became a member of Petit's company Ballets des Champs-Élysées, where she appeared in numerous small roles over the next few years. She took the name Violette Verdy in 1949, when she was chosen by director Ludwig Berger to star in his film Ballerina (known in the USA as Dream Ballerina). Critical praise for her acting and pure classical ballet technique won her contracts with several European ballet companies. She toured the USA with Les Ballets de Paris in 1953 and with London Festival Ballet in 1954-1955. She had leading roles with the ballet company of Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1955-1956. With the Ballet Rambert in 1957, she danced the title role in Giselle, which became one of her signature roles. Verdy came to the attention of American Ballet Theatre in New York City, and was invited in 1957 to join that company. From 1958 to 1977, she was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, where she performed in several works created for her by George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins. Later she served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet and the Boston Ballet. She was Distinguished Professor of Music (Ballet) at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, in Bloomington. She was awarded the Legion d'Honneur from the French government in 2008. Verdy started writing children's books in 1970, and also published the memoirs I Remember Balanchine (1991) and Rudolf Noureev à Paris (2003).

5 stars: A beautiful ballet book for all ages

Every year my family goes to see the nutcracker. While I never was interested in physically doing ballet, (I preferred soccer instead) I still loved to hear the music, see the beautiful costumes, and lose myself in the magic. I got this book when I was eight and I've kept it in my library over the years. I recently thought that a girl I babysit may enjoy it and so pulled it out again.

The book is authored by former ballet dancer Violette Verdy, and before each play (there are six: "The Firebird", "Coppelia", "Swan Lake", "The Nutcracker", "Giselle", and "Sleeping Beauty") she writes a blurb about the history of the play and sometimes her joy of dancing it. The plays themselves are told as stories and even contain dialogue. For those who enjoy watching ballet, but aren't sure of the story, this book is perfect. Even better than the stories, are the beautiful illustrations by Marcia Brown. There are twenty beautiful pictures which aid in telling the stories, making this book even better for children.

I was sorry to find that they are no longer printing this book. You can find it used on several sites, and I recommend doing so for that child or ballet lover in your life. You won't regret it.

The stories of six of the best loved ballets: The Firebird, Coppolia, Swan Lake, The Nutcrakcer, Giselle, and Sleeping Beauty, recounted by a former principal ballerina with the New York City Ballet. She gives careful explanations of the dancers' movements, making this an excellent source for anyone seeing the ballets in person or on tape.
