I didn't find this as interesting as others have. Hard for me to get invested, the only reason I pushed through was the high approvals of others who read it. Don't need it, wouldn't recommend.

This was a really intriguing read. I liked that Walls wrote without much introspection and focused on writing what actually happened, according to her memory.

There were many parts of her childhood that sounded downright fun, but I just can't get over her parents' irresponsibility and subversive priorities.

The complacency regarding sexual abuse was what horrified me the most. After reporting to her mother that her uncle had groped her while he masturbated, Jeannette's mother has more sympathy for the uncle than her daughter, saying that her uncle is just lonely. She goes on to tell her daughter:

"... sexual assault [is] a crime of perception. If you don't think you're hurt, then you aren't. So many women make such a big deal out of these things. But you're stronger than that." (p.184)

Unfortunately, this was not the only incidence of sexual abuse recorded in the book, but every time, her parents glossed over it and acted like it was not wrong at all.

Good read, in Jeannette's usual easy writing style. Because THE GLASS CASTLE is one of my all-time favorites, I knew this likely wouldn't be as good (this is fiction, TGC isn't.) I also enjoyed her second novel, and although I really enjoyed this east-to-read story, the reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because there wasn't as much plot as her other two books. Again, those were memoirs, so I guess it shows real life is even more bizarre than fiction! ;)

I love all of Jeanette Wall’s novels. She writes about strong, interesting women with strong family bonds. Sallie Kincaid has southern swagger , shoots from the hip , drives a mean automobile, defies federal laws and fiercely loves her family. You root for her completely in a story where men are the disappointment and women the heroes ! Way to go Jeanette Walls yet again
