Sir Everton Weekes is one of the greatest batsmen the cricket world has ever seen. His story, one of a child born into poverty, rising to the heights of the world's second most popular sport, while dealing with racism along the way, would make a great book. This, sadly, isn't quite it.

Weekes does talk about his upbringing, with his father absent working in the oilrigs of Trinidad, his early unemployment and his rise to international cricket. The memoirs are more about an old man reminiscing about his life than an incisive autobiography and Weekes keeps many things unsaid; you wouldn't know from this book that his son is the former West Indian wicketkeeper David Murray. As Murray has had an "interesting" life, it would have been informative to hear Weekes's views about Murray. However, at no point in the book is Murray mentioned.

Still, any book by a towering figure like Weekes is better than no book by him at all, and there could be worse books to read.
