Read this one aloud to my wife and we absolutely loved it. It's a perfect companion to Lucy Cooke's [b:Bitch: On the Female of the Species|59228221|Bitch On the Female of the Species|Lucy Cooke|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1649033381l/59228221._SY75_.jpg|75617835].

One thing I liked about Phallacy (and Bitch) is that they make it clear that there's nothing in the animal kingdom that is a model for human behaviour. And that's even before we get into how many different kinds of genitalia there are!… (mais)

As a retired nurse, I love anything to do with biology, and as a retired labor and delivery nurse, I love anything to do with reproduction and if these books are delivered with wit, I find them irresistible. Willingham gives examples of many kinds of penises or "intromittum, ... organs that transmit gametes from one partner to the other'' because the scientific world is full of research about penises. Strangely, there is comparably little research into the vagina except for how it accommodates the penis. Anyway, as penises go, the human variety is pretty mediocre in both size and accomplishments. It doesn't sing, grasp or reach way over to another partner (as do Darwin's beloved barnacles). It does exist while in many species, most birds, evolution has erased it. The ancient Greeks preferred small ones, but she conjectures that's because they also preferred young boys as sexual partners. It also is not the epitome of a man. It's just another nice, functional organ, not essentially frightening or aggressive. If you like [[Mary Roach]], I think you'll like [[Emily Willingham]].… (mais)

This book was not as useful as the blurb on LitHub or the review at/on Publisher's Weekly said. It tried to be as humorous/accessible as other popular science books. There is a long chapter at the beginning that might be called "brains for dummies" makes the point that the brain has millions of cells, some of which send electrical impulses or release or react to natural biochemicals. It points out that (1) food supplements are almost unregulated, (2) there are booming unregulated industries that claim that people can improve brain functions by taking supplements, playing games, taking courses, using assorted devices or taking silly advice about how to improve thinking. It advises that people should be skeptical. The people who need this advice are unlikely to read it. I stopped spending my time on this. I should have been more careful. The publicists used snake oil to sell a book about snake oil claims about neurobiology.… (mais)

Liked:

- section on violence and screens

- info on childhood obesity.

Issues:

-Citations should be easily traceable from claim to location.

- overly focused on SIDS. Don't read this if you want to avoid being traumatized about SIDS.

- Focused largely (like 3/4 of the book) on preconception to 6 months. What about the other 4 years? Read another book for pregnancy info.

- Doesn't think for itself, with the exception of the co- sleeping chapter. Most of that information is readily found on the WHO, CDC, or APA websites.

See other reviews ranging from 1-3 stars for an accurate portrayal.

Edit: I really love that on Goodreads you can see what other books they have written(though there are plenty of glitches). Taking a brief glance at that gives you a better idea of specialties and pet topics.
