For anyone who has ever had their doubts about the Easter Bunny—after all, rabbits can't lay eggs, can't free themselves from their cages, cannot lift baskets, and (most of all) are frightened of people—this sweet picture book has some answers. As tall as the child reader, this leporine figure is blessed with good fortune, left unmolested by hungry rabbits and aggressive dogs, and able to enter human residences with his adaptable lock-pick ears...

Originally published in Germany as Der Osterhase, and then translated and adapted in English by Paula Wiseman, The Easter Bunny pairs a simple, matter-of-fact, but also amusing explanation of this holiday rabbit's doings from author Winfried Wolf with appealing watercolor artwork from illustrator Agnès Mathieu. I think my favorite part of the narrative would have to be the Easter Bunny's ability to pick locks his his ears—very helpful, I'm sure!—while visually I was particularly drawn to this rabbit's pastel patchwork pants, in the same shade as the eggs he carries. I don't know that this one is destined to become a holiday favorite, but I am glad to have encountered it, and think it would make an amusing Easter selection, particularly with a child who has asked questions about the Easter Bunny, and whether he is real.
