My children said this was melancholy. Which is true. A good discussion on what can happen when people in charge feel like you’ve embarrassed them.
I loved this book as a child! In the 1980s, I had a Dutch boyfriend and when I showed my battered copy to him, he identified the city Peter takes the horses to as Aalkmar. Sure enough, when I visited Aalkmar I recognized the clock tower and the city hall...amazing. I've loved the book even more since.
