Another glorious volume in the Monuments of Civilization series from Cassell, London, in a large format with authoritative text from a group of Japanese experts, and opulent colour photographs and diagrams. The book features the figurative, decorative arts especially mosaics and frescoes, which were the special strength of the eastern European civilization known as Byzantium, spreading from Greece and Asia Minor (Constantinople) to the west upto northern Italy, and the east into the heart of Russia and the Caucasus. Of course, there are also illustrations throughout of the architecture of each of these regions: not just the main (and well-known) structures in centres like Constantinople, Ravenna, Venice and Sicily, but also some rare examples from remote corners of the realm like Mount Athos, Cappadocia, the Balkans and centres in old Russia like Kiev and Novgorod. The (presumably) large format of the photographs affords an unsurpassed clarity and a feeling of the viewer being in the frame. No practical tour, with even a generous budget, could possibly cover such a wide range in such detail, and any visit to some of these places would be enriched immensely by perusing his masterly volume.… (mais)
