This book is about a young, Korean boy named Bong Nam who travels through the woods an finds a large snake trying to eat baby pheasants. After throwing a stick at the snake, the boy goes off to swap work for goods. On his way back he gets lost and is lured into a home with a beautiful woman. This woman transforms into the snake he tried to kill and gives Bong Nam until midnight to make a bell ring or he will be eaten. As the book goes on he pleads for help if anyone can hear him. Right at midnight the bell rings and he is saved. Come for Bong Nam to find out that the pheasants saved him and rang the bell.
This book's main focus is to treat others the way you want to be treated. If someone does something helpful for you, they deserve the same respect from you in return. This was shown by the pheasants saving Bong Nam after he saved their lives from the snake. I would recommend this book for children who are learning about a new culture because the book talks about foods and gives a glimpse of daily life in the household. This book would also work well when trying to teach students how to be kind in the classroom.
Note: Some students may pick this book up and think of a pheasant and a peasant, so it would be better for children to know the difference before reading.
