Acerca da Minha Biblioteca
LT is the best thing to happen to our library since bookcases and shelves!!

Our library is large for one family, although it's not anywhere near the size of the largest libraries represented here on LT. (My best estimate is ~4 to ~5,000 volumes; I'll know what the total is if I can make the time to enter the books we have; really need to build more shelving... with glass doors so I don't have to dust the books, but we can still see them.)

Anyway, what I specifically appreciate the most about LibraryThing are the tags. I LOVE tags... my philosophy is "Tags are our friends." I really like the fact that each book has multiple tags that bring it up in a browseable list. It's been a huge help to me when pulling out specific books to loan to friends, students, or my kids. Books cannot be used if they cannot be found, and it disturbs me to see good books sit unused.

I started here on this site by actually cataloging every book with the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system... I just like it better than the Dewey Decimal (DDC) system. However, I quickly realized that this is my library... it does not need to be organized by the LCC, DDC, or anything else. So I decided that I wouldn't catalog our books like a "real library" (although if you look closely, you'll see all of the Library of Congress info is there for most of our books), but I did want to be able to have a searchable index of tags that would create the simplest way for me, my wife, my children, and even my friends to quickly find books they could read on any topic.

So I took the LCC tags out of my tags (at least I think I got them all) and started over with room-specific tags, bookcase- (or box-) specific tags, shelf- (and/or physical location-) specific tags, subject tags, decade published tags, and 1st / 2nd editions (mostly only 1st ed, 1st printings, or 2nd ed are tagged, but a few others are too). There are many other tags -- "Faith Based Books" occupies a large portion of the library (with many still to enter -- these are anything that reference God positively -- from Bibles, commentaries, devotionals, & biographies to Christian fiction, money management, & "how-to" books).

"History," "Reference," and "Business" also have quite a bit of shelf-space each, but there are a number of loose-cannon tags (to match my personality) interspersed throughout as well. All of our Autobiographies, Biographies, Diaries, Correspondence, and Memoirs are combined under a "Biographical Works" tag -- including biographical works of military units and corporations. Haven't run across anyone else that does this, but seems to work best for me. I've also gotten a few "free" books sent to me to read and review, those are tagged as "Early Reviewer's Copy." I have quite a bit of fiction (mostly Louis L'Amour westerns, some Zane Grey, and classics) which I've hung onto over the years, but I usually just read non-fiction books anymore.

Books coming out of boxes (and coming home for the first time) are usually labeled "~Shelve" while those that are recently entered into LT are only labeled "~Tag This" until I get around to unpiling them. (Some have been unpiled and shelved... so they'll have a location as well, but won't have all of their topic-specific tags yet.)

If you look at my tag clouds, you'll probably notice I have a few books entered here on LT as "Wish-List." (No, I don't have any shame; yes, I like to give not-so-subtle hints about what I really want). Those in the Wish List are usually labeled "NIL" (not in library) until I get them as a gift... for Christmas, my birthday, or whatever other reason I may receive a book. (= The other NIL books are those I've checked out of the library recently. If they're good enough (4½-5 stars) they too will make the Wish List... eventually.

I'm a voracious reader; started getting in trouble for "reading too much" back in third grade. Little has changed over time. When speed reading I have gotten up to 1,200wpm, but I typically only read between 500-700 wpm (when I want to retain what I'm reading).

Have been an assistant at my church (First Baptist Church of SW Broward) since Dec of 1994. Started as unpaid staff, that changed soon after the current Pastor arrived (the former one died of cancer). In the time I've been here, I've done everything that can be done in a church.

I am currently (enjoying) teaching history in our Christian school, keeping track of all the finances, doing a lot of the maintenance, overseeing the "sound" part of the control booth (not so good with the Hog4 light board), as well as the grounds work. I've also (just last year) organized a monthly Gospel/Bluegrass Sing & Jam... we sit around, play instruments, sing, and have a lot of fun together... I think it helps that most of the ladies bring desserts.

We do have a great team of people here and I know could not accomplish as much as I do without my wife and the help of numerous others. (Please check out the link below for more info on the church or the Christian school; if you're local, we'd love to have you come visit us.) Depending upon your interests, you can find me thru the different links below, just let me know you're a LibraryThing member.

Lastly, I tend to add people to my "Interesting Libraries" when I find others with books I like. Then I can see the new books they add when I login to L.T. and (hopefully) find other good books to acquire for our library.
