Sobre mimHello. I'm Jerry Yoakum. I love my daughter. I have several pictures of my daughter reading or when she was really little handing me books to read to her. I would give up everything for her. I recommend reading [Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters Devotional: 52 Devotions Every Father Needs].

I enjoy getting outdoors to go canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. My friends tell me that I read too much nonfiction which could be true. I do make an effort to read some fiction to balance things out.

I write a blog, Jerry Yoakum: Cogitation about Computing, that is almost entirely focused on software engineering. I reference a lot of "old" articles and books because I want to drive home that we should not delude ourselves into thinking that that we stand apart from the founders of computing. We should learn from them; otherwise, we just make the same mistakes over again.

My favorite author is Mary Roach. She is a science writer that finds answers to the stuff that really interests people while still respecting the science.

For humor, you just can't go wrong with Darby Conley. He writes the "Get Fuzzy" comics.

I believe in the study of all religions and philosophies in order to be a well-rounded person. I can recommend [The Meaning of Life: Perspectives from the World's Great Intellectual Traditions] by The Teaching Company as a good source for independent study. I've also found Stoicism to be very helpful. [A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy] is a good book.
