'He spent his days there in a perpetual summer.
Stuck in a rock-cleft like a beachcomber
Washed-up, high and dry amid luminous spray,
Intent on pond life, wildflower and wind-play …'

From Calypso by Derek Mahon

I met a traveller from an antique land ...

The name Ὠγυγία entwines several idea-strands:
Castaways, and Island Shores;
The Ancient and The Aborigine;
Exile, and Submersion;
The Atlantean, and the Primeval;
A magical island in the West, an analogous Hy-Brasil; Ancient Ireland, linked to glorious and venerable events of the Classical World from citations in Plutarch, and Strabo, who site Ogygia in the Atlantic, and conflated by Roderic O’Flaherty with the island of Calypso of Homer’s Odyssey, where Ulysses was detained for seven years; The Greek adjective Ogygios (Ωγύγιος), meaning Ogygian, came to be synonymous with "primeval", "primal", and "at earliest dawn", suggesting that Homer's Ogygia was a primordial island. Ogygia, a former name of Boeotia, a place that sank beneath the waters of Lake Copais, a lake that resembled no other, an unfixed feature constantly changing, a movable, indented lake, which each year flooded neighbouring areas and changed shape; later geographers associated the quality of this inundation with part of the putative sunken or mythical Atlantean island chain ... and so on. Tsundoku.

'The ancient travel accounts will some day
be as precious as the greatest works of art;
for the earth was holy when unknown,
and it will never be that again.'
Elias Canetti, 'The Human Province'.
'The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.'

W.B. Yeats, 'The Second Coming''

Much he discourses, and of various points,
All unconnected, void of limbs and joints;
He rails, persuades, explains, and moves the will
By fierce bold words and strong mechanic skill.'

George Crabbe, 'Religious Sects'.

'Truth, in the final analysis, has always and only served oppression. [or ' ... has never served anything but oppression' or 'At the end of the day, the truth is a fascist concept that only serves to oppress'] Too many hopes, wretched disappointments, and blood-soaked paradises teach us in any case to be wary of it'.
Alain Robbe-Grillet, 'Ghosts in the Mirror'

'... absolute beginnings are too aflame with potentiality to contemplate with the naked eye,
and only lapse of time and corruption of report make them bearable.'

Tim Robinson, 'Stones of Aran: Labyrinth'.

'It is as if the past is a great ship that has gone ashore, and archivist and writer must gather as much of the rich squandered cargo as they can'.

George Mackay Brown

'There will be a talking of lovely things,
there will be cognizance of the seasons,
there will be men who know the flights of birds.
In new days there will be love for women:
we will walk the balance of artistry,
and things will have a middle and an end
and be loved because they are beautiful.
Who in a walk will find a lasting vase
depicting dance and hold it in his hands
and sell it then? No man on the new earth
will barter with malice nor make of stone
a hollowed riddle; for art will be art,
the freak, the rare no longer commonplace.
There will be a going back to the laws.'
Michael Hartnett, 'There will be a talking ...'

'What would the world be, once bereft
Of wet and wildness? Let them be left,
O let them be left, wildness and wet;
Long live the weeds and the wilderness yet.'

Gerard Manley Hopkins, 'Inversnaid'

'England of the burrow-in green, chalk galvanized giant,
Undulating earth-bank fortress, flinted Roman wall,
full flair gorse, messy hay-trails waiting
to be bin-bag-baled by steel mandibles:

you unroll through the window of a train,
But should I get out in search of you, you'd be off
and I'd be left wandering down dual carriageways,
Looking across bean fields and filthy ditches'

Holly Hopkins, 'England, where did you go?'

'Its not about statistics, but intangibles' Kathleen Jamie 'A ragged urchin, aimless and alone
Loitered about that vacancy; a bird
Flew up to safety from his well-aimed stone.
That girls are raped, that two boys knife a third,
Were axioms to him, who'd never heard
Of any world where promises were kept
Or one could weep because another wept'.

W.H.Auden, 'The Shield of Achilles'

"...there is no happiness except through freedom from Angst and only creative work, communion with nature, and helping others are anxiety-free."

Cyril Connolly, The Unquiet Grave, p. 37-8.

"I feel like part of the vanishing breed that thinks a writer should be read and not heard, let alone seen. I think this is because there seems so often today to be a tendency to put the person in the place of his or her work, to turn the creative artist into a performing one, to find what a writer says about writing somehow more valid, or more real, than the writing itself".

William Gaddis — from his acceptance speech for the National Book Award in Fiction for J R , April 1976

"He dived deeper and deeper into his books; he had taken all obsolescence to be his province...he would only read what was uncouth and useless...- All these were his delight. Such were his companions...books, the thoughts of books, the stirrings of imagination, all fused into one phantasy by the magic of the outland country."
Arthur Machen "The Hill of Dreams"

"To smuggle in elements of a later knowledge when describing the mental pattern of people in an earlier period is a common temptation to writers, which should be resisted."
Arthur Koestler "Scum of the Earth"
