In the off hours, besides reading, I've published a bit of poetry. I was also a staff reviewer at Innsmouth Free Press (innsmouthfreepress.com) and do a lot of Amazon reviews.

In my days at Macalester College, I specialized in English literature and geology.

Sobre a minha bibliotecaI'm not a big fan of the star system on LibraryThing or Amazon nor am I consistent using it. Roughly, here's how I use it: 1 star -- no redeeming qualities, 2 stars -- mostly bad but with one or two good points, 3 stars -- average, 4 stars -- overall a good book with one or two flaws, and 5 stars -- couldn't think of anything immediately wrong with the book.

You will notice that most of my reviews get four stars. I don't think I'm a particularly generous reviewer. However, not being a professional reviewer and not a particularly fast reader, I tend to not pick up books I don't think will be enjoyable or beneficial in the first place.

Since 1987, I've kept a journal of my impression of most of the books I've read. Any review of mine starting out with something like "My reactions upon reading this book in xxx" comes from these journals. Since these were never written with the public in mind, that explains their somewhat disorganized nature even after my light editing. My impressions upon reading the same book today might not be similar.

My primary interest is science fiction and weird fiction, but I have other interests: Jacobean drama; geology; World War One; espionage; the history of the American West, Rome, the Crusades, and the Black Death.

Being easily distracted, I can't claim to have read everything by my favorite authors. I'm just kindly disposed to them.
