Are you currently reading something as research or inspiration for your NaNo? Do you read during November? If so, do you find it more helpful to read the same genre you're writing in, or something completely opposite?

I'm finding Sky of Swords: A Tale of the King's Blades by Dave Duncan terrific inspiration for my NaNo, as I'm writing fantasy this year.

I'm reading NOVEL WRITING 16 STEPS TO SUCCESS
by Evan Marshall.

I don't think Evan had NaNoWriMo in mind when he wrote the book but it is useful in thinking about prep work before writing.

I like to go through No Plot, No Problem and zette's NaNo for the New and Insane every year before or just at the beginning of November. Otherwise I try not to do much (or any) pleasure reading during NaNo month because THERE'S JUST NOT ENOUGH TIME!!! if I want to get to 50k before Nov. 30.

Of course, sometimes I just can't resist the temptation of a shiny new book, so I'll probably end up reading one or at the most two novels during November as I have every year since I started.

I should probably think about doing some real research reading for NaNo.

In terms of inspiration though, I did read a book called Shadow Hills earlier this month and the supernatural YA pretty much inspired me to completely switch gears. I was thinking about writing a mystery/crime novel but in reflecting on how much I enjoy fantasy/sci-fi stuff I decided I wanted to stick with that. And the YA first person narration really got me to think more about POV. I might just write in first this year...
