How wonderful is spring...?

My answer: pretty darned wonderful!

Spring BREAK, especially.

The coming week may actually mean a chance to read *for fun* a little bit. (Imagine that...!)

What do YOU read, when the weather is nice and you're taking a break from studies & research?

My pile for the next few days includes:
1. old Martha Stewart Living issues on gardening
2. the past 3 months of Harpers Magazine
3. Persepolis II by Marjane Satrapi

An odd mix, but oh well!

And you...?

I took my spring break opportunity to go hiking and camping in Death Valley with a couple of friends. I brought a bunch of non-fiction with me: Dark Tide: the great Boston molasses flood of 1919, Bait and Switch, Last train to Paradise and one Spanish novel Shadow of the Wind. While I read a bit on the plane, I barely touched the books - the scenary was too incredible during the day, and I was too exhausted at night.

I spent spring break writing my thesis. I get no break until it's turned in.

I enjoyed my final spring break while I was in grad school last year. It was just good to get away from campus!

A week back at the grindstone, and I'm already aching to be able to read for fun again... before starting college, I used to read for pleasure daily. It's one of the things I've missed most, these long extra years...

When on trips, bfertig, I always assume that I'll read on the plain and then never do. Hope springs eternal, I guess.

Speaking of hope, I hope the end of your thesis is in sight, Sniv.

Wait a minute here, now I feel cheated. I thought Spring Break didn't apply to grad students!

#7 well it certainly doesn't apply to me! :(
I will be spending the next week reading a million articles, writing up part of an ethnography, grading...okay I'm sure everyone gets the point, basically it isn't much of a break.

However, lots of grad. students in my dept are going to great places like Europe, Hawaii, and Florida.

You must *force* it to apply to you, #7...!

Otherwise, no rest. Ever. And how long could a person endure? One's intellectual and emotional health and productivity would certainly suffer. (Which does no good at all, come the end of the semester, right?)

Here one year later (after my original post), this spring break means a trip home to see family for the first time in months. I'm also still using the time to read for fun (although there's also plenty of reading-for-teaching to be done in the meanwhile). Hitting up a couple of used book shops and antique stores in my hometown too. Spending too much on good wine, and staying up far too late (yay!) reading novels long after the family head to bed.

In short, it's lovely.

You are really lucky Fullmoonblue. I have an ungodly amount of writing to complete over this break. It seems if I take any time off for myself I become overwhelmed with guilt knowing that there are several dozen students better than me working round the clock in the library.

Okay since it was around 60 this weekend, I can officially announce that Spring is wonderful!
