My great aunt recently passed away. I knew that she was in possession of a ton of old photos, I'd seen all of them, but had never been able to get copies. I lived to far away.
Her son has purchased a scanner and is downloading all the things that she had. I didn't realize that she has a copy of my great great great grandfather's naturalization papers!! And copies of enlistment and discharge papers for another relative from WWI! And copies of birth notices!!
He sent me about twelve scans so far. I can only imagine what other treasures that there are!
I'm so excited!

Recently my great uncle gave me a file of papers that belonged to my grandmother. She had done a bit of family history research back in the 1950s and had written down what she learned from her mother and her husband's mother, both of whom had died by then. I couldn't have pieced together the family history without those handwritten notes! I'm very happy for you!

Sorry to hear about your great aunt's death but how wonderful she kept all this information! Also very nice of her son to now make it available to the rest of the family.
When my grandmother died last year, her personal jewelry was split between me and my cousin. It wasn't worth much in monetary terms, but had emotional value to me as several of the pieces had belonged to her mother and mother-in-law. My cousin didn't care one bit and has given her items to me. I was very glad she did that instead of just selling them!

That's fantastic! There are so many old photos, letters, certificates etc. that are just now starting to be put into digital form. My dad has slides from 50+ years ago that he is going to start scanning with his new computer & slide scanner, and I've already been scanning family letters from his collection that I have on loan for that purpose. Every now and then one of us comes across a graduation certificate or military document and that's one more piece of family history to add. A childhood friend has recently uploaded video to Vimeo that was taken from film made 40-50 years ago of the far-away tiny community in which I grew up. It's wonderful how we are all being able to share memories in this way. You are in for a real treat!!
