characters who are naturalists/ interested in nature

Hi,

does anyone know of any characters in Dickens (or other nineteenth century fiction) who were naturalists or simply keen on nature. For example, Roger Hamley from Wives and daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell.

I have racked my brains for a naturalist in 19thC fiction. The only one I can come up with is Old Brooke in Tom Brown's School Days - I think Dickens doesn't have one because Dickens was the quintessential "townie" - and had little or no interest himself.
