I came across the name Miljenko Jergović in conversation with a Slovene reader today. MJ is of Croatian origin, but from Sarajevo. A book of short stories is title Sarajski Marlborova (Sarajovo Marlboros), and the fellow was quite enthusiastic about the author, who writes mainly about the Balkan wars of the 90s. He could be worth looking into.

Sarajevo Marlboro was published in English by Penguin and Hushion House in the nineties.

correction: Sarajevsko Marlboro is probably the correct title in Croatian. at least its closer than the slop i typed above

No, the original is "Sarajevo Marlboro". It's a reference to one of the cigarette brands produced by the local tobacco factory.

Wrong again. Thanks. Though I do know the reference. Drina, right?

The factory? It's Fabrika duhana Sarajevo. Drina is apparently one of their brands too.

That makes me right enough to live another day, then.
