I have noticed this group is a bit moribund.
Well, since Biology (or our understanding of it) moves so fast, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a book which summarizes whats been happening in the last 5 (or even 10 in my case) years?

What's happened during the last 5-10 years in all of biology?

I doubt there is, or could be, such a book. You might get useful suggestions for particular subdisciplines if you say what you're interested in.

If you want to catch up on evolution, there's Evolution: The First Four Billion Years and The greatest show on Earth.

Sorry Group,

I did cast a rather large net :-)
Some interests
1) Archaea and extremophiles (spl?)
2) when I was yound we only had 2 kingdoms. Why 5 now? Perhaps a potted history.
3) In evolution, Biological clocks and dating techniques. eg DNA drift, variable mutation rates etc.

Thanks Lola, I have Dawkins book and will look for "...1st 4 Billion years..."

Potted shrimps from my "vast" seine net?
Sure it can be spread on toast.
Try potted "Blue Whale" with "Giant Panda" spread as well, yummy.

Potted history on 5 kingdoms, and covers bits of the others - Mendel's Demon: Gene Justice and the Complexity of Life by Mark Ridley. It falls outside your timeframe a bit, being published in 2000.

Thanks #7,

Ordering on Amazon (or Book Depository)
Just have to wait for my income :-) for cash.

Please keep other recommendations going.

Very early life as "guessed" through biochemistry?

Really, any current thinking on "the start of life".

Oh Dear,

When looking thru Amazon, as per. yours recommendations, I did order 5 or so of their suggestions on the topic of Biology.

I will list them (and request critiques) when they land on my

I'm currently reading The Sixth Extinction, which covers evolutionary principles quite well. Fascinating -- and depressing.
