I created this group a couple months ago and I guess I never realized that anybody joined!

So I just wanted to say hello. I'm Jamie, I'm a 20 year old college student from Missouri.

And you?

Hello and thanks for creating the group!

I'm Sandra Barret, author and mostly lesbian fiction reader (which is why I'm here!). I've just started adding the books I've really enjoyed reading and I'm going to make an effort to put in at least a little review blurb on why I liked the book.

I'm Crystal, 24, from New York (the state, not the city...yet). My partner and I read like it's going out of style, so LibraryThing sounded like a good site for us. :) Lots of our books are lesbian in one way or another, and we're always looking for more suggestions for our TBR lists.

I just graduated from college -- my majors were English/Creative Writing and Feminist Studies. My partner graduated two years ago, and her major was Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

We're regular Michfest attendees (yay!), we love the Indigo Girls, and we only wear Birkenstocks (okaaay, that last one's NOT TRUE, but I figured I was on a stereotype roll, so...).

Glad to meet everyone. :) Thanks for creating this group.

Hello! Just found this group. I'm Laura, I'm in New Zealand right now in vet school, but I spent the 8 years previous living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I grew up in the Midwest. I read probably more than is healthy -- it's a great break from the rote memorization required by school.

I'm a 23 year old lesbian from San Francisco. Recently went through a breakup so sticking my nose in any book I can find seems to be a good alternative to crying. *sigh* so is life

Hi all, just found this group. I'm 31 lesbian (but that's almost a given huh?), from Denver. I love to read, mostly lesbian fiction, crime, and sci-fi/fantasy.

38yo dyke. My partner (of 10 years) & I are in Boston (Jamaica Plain - the preeminent lesbian neighborhood in the Boston area!), but identify as Bay Areans.

In fiction I read mostly SF, but used to love to read mysteries. I read lots of nonfiction: legal stuff, SF studies, history, queer theory, politics, etc.

Hi all. I'm Hannah, 22, student of literary translation (English, French, German), native of the lovely Ruhr Valley*, about to move to Reading, England (where I hope the Thames will stay in its bed for as long as I'm there - après moi le déluge). Seems I'm the first non-American - at least on this thread - either way.
I've only just discovered that there IS a significant amount of lesbian fiction (one doesn't exactly learn about it at school), and consequently started to read it. AndCrystal, I love the Indigo Girls and never wear Birkenstocks! (And I use parentheses a lot; also semicolons.**)

*Wikipedia significantly calls it "an urban area... consisting of a number of large formerly industrial cities".

ciao everyone, I just today stumbled across this group and thought that this is for me. I'm 31 years old and live in Finland. I love reading, but for some reason the local library does not very often get the lesbian books I ask them to get into their collection. wonder why... ;)

Welcome solsken,

I am Finnish-American, born in/living in the United States. My dream (if work didn't get in the way) would be to go to grad school in Finland and study the impact of Scandinavian social policy on the lives of women (and children). Maybe when I retire....

Hi there Sisaruus! I've studied also a bit of that as a part of my studies in sociology and women's studies. Have you ever visited Finland?

Hi. I'm American, my wife is African and we live in Canada. We left at least half of our library behind in each of our last two moves and yet we still have cases of books to unpack. We have made a pledge to not purchase any more books this year (we tried it last year), but it is very frustrating trying to find lesbian books in our local library. We are always looking for books that may make it into the Alberta library system. Doesn't work very well, so we always end up fighting over the delivery of Curve magazine!

Hello!! I'm an OWL in Perth, Western Australia. My partner discovered LibraryThing a few weeks ago and I reckon it is the best thing since sliced bread...

My taste in lesbian literature is eclectic....I tend to read anything I can get my hands on, whether fiction or nonfiction.

Besides that I have a growing library of fibre arts, knitting and quilting related books. The latest purchase was The Painted Quilt by Linda and Laura Kemshall.

I'm currently reading Ironcrown Moon by Julian May. I've been a huge fan of hers for years.

Hi; I joined this group ages ago but never introduced myself! I'm Sarah, I'm 24, and a recent graduate. Looking for a job in journalism, ooh. I don't read tons of lesbian fiction, per se, but I certainly enjoy books with lesbian themes.

In fact, if I could have some more science fiction and dark (I mean *dark*) fantasy/steampunk/alternate history books with lesbian characters, that'd be pretty fantastic. ;) Off-hand, I can think of...er...one. And I might be forgetting another...um, one, probably.

Wow, that's depressing. Even the one really fantastical Jeanette Winterson book I like ("The Passion") is heterocentric.

Ah well...

I just joined LibraryThing, and was delighted to find this group.

I am the author of a trilogy, When Women Were Warriors. The main characters are all women in relationships with women, although in Bronze Age Britain, they probably wouldn't have called themselves lesbians.

saroz said:

Well, OK, my book isn't *dark* dark, although there are plenty of dark moments, and it isn't really fantasy. I call it Epic without fantasy/Sword without sorcery, because I really tried to make it real-world credible, i.e. a society in which women are powerful, take leadership roles, make dreadful mistakes, learn from them, and finally succeed.

I am making When Women Were Warriors Book I available for free, to introduce people to my work. The entire text of Book I is posted on my website, and I'd be glad to email a .prc (Kindle or mobi) file of Book I to anyone who requests one.

Hi, all.

Seems like I'm the crone of the group. :D Let's see....if you add my age and my partner's age you get.....116. This year we will celebrate 26 years together.

I'm a bookaholic - always have been. I started reading lesbian books in the early 70s - from the older pulp romances (always so tragic!!) through Rita Mae Brown's Rubyfruit Jungle through Sally Gearheart's The Wanderground and everything I could get my hands on in those days. We were so thrilled when each new lesbian author appeared, and we waited for each new book. Today I can't keep up!

I love mysteries, so these days my limited budget goes more to that genre, and less to the romances, etc. My favourite author is Sarah Dreher, I am a great fan of the Stoner McTavish series, and I adore her plays as well (Lesbian Stages). I also like Katherine V. Forrest, Claire McNab, Lee Lynch, Penny Sumner, and the list goes on. I'm trying to get to know some of the newer authors as well. I have to order them all online, I try to support the women's publishers as much as possible.

>14 saroz: saroz, do you like Forrest's fantasy works?

>13 ILoveAGoodYarn: GoodYarn, I am also a knitter! There is always at least one book and one knitting project in my bag wherever I go. Are you also on Ravelry?

Good to find this group!

I'm not really a mystery buff, but I just finished Angel Food & Devil Dogs by Liz Bradbury, a Maggie Gale Mystery, the first of a series, and I really enjoyed it.
Aside from being a good mystery, the characters were so much fun to be with, and I admire her protagonist, Maggie Gale. Not your average lesbian gumshoe at all, she's a many-faceted character who endlessly surprised me. I hate spoilers, so I'll say no more than that.
The book is for sale on Amazon and also from Liz Bradbury's website at:

Hey there,

I'm a 29 year old dyke from Melbourne Australia. I started a lesbian book club, and we're focusing on lesbian novels (oddly enough) and I wanted some ideas, so I joined this group. We just read Highsmith by Marijane Meaker and now we're onto The Orphan Gunner by Sara Knox. Have only just started it; it's nice to read something by an Australian.

Oh, and I'm an English teacher and have just finished my Masters in Education. If I never read Judith Butler again it may be too soon.

Cheers

Howdy everybody,

I'm 22 and originally from Missouri. I've lived the past couple years in California although I'm still attending a school via the internet in MO. I'm majoring in Human Resources.

I read mainly in the fantasy and science fiction genres but dabble in others when the mood strikes me.

imadelaine, you are not the only one tramatized by Judith Butler! i had to read her as a part of my studies, and most of the time I think the things she says could have been said in a simpler way.

Oh, that is such a comfort. I think she could say some great things in a paragraph, rather than a chapter.

I have added you as a friend, cos I checked out your library and it looks cool.

Hope that's ok.

What a marvelous group to stumble across. I'm recently retired, more by necessity, less by choice. For the first time in my life I have all the time in the world to read, and I always was a compulsive reader! My partner of 19 years and I live in rural Florida. Chana, we have you beat by one year. I've collected books for years from the early pulp novels: Has any one read/collected Ann Bannon? and am amazed/joyful at how many books are now available. I'm looking forward to hearing about all these books so I can put them on my reading list.

Hello, everyone. I just joined. I am the author of two books with lesbian emphasis. I say "lesbian emphasis" because I aspire to write books that celebrate our lesbian world but also appeal to all avid readers. I love Sara Waters and Rita Mae Brown and Val McDermid and Dorothy Allison.
My latest book is the fictional memoir of a fifties Hollywood gay actress. It's already seen some very good reviews, including AfterEllen.com.
If anyone wants to check out my books and interesting, yet checkered past, go to: www.lindamorganstein.com

Looks like I'm the baby of the group! I'm 19 (well, okay, 18. But I'll be 19 in a month!), Canadian, and quite obviously a lesbian. I'm still working on reading more lesbian books, fiction and non-fiction, but my favourite authours (overall, they just happen to also be lesbians) are Sarah Waters and Jeanette Winterson. My absolute favourite book is Tipping the Velvet, but I have to join in the love for Rubyfruit Jungle, of course. I have actually read Well of Loneliness and am very proud of myself for that. It wasn't as dry as I was expecting, actually!

I just started to become active on LT, but I've been a loyal Bookmoocher for much longer (my wishlist is getting near 1500 books). I love hearing any sort of recommendations for lesbian books. I'm so glad to have found this group! Okay, I'm done rambling.
