Pride and Prejudice - Marvel Graphic Novel
Emma - Marvel Graphic Novel - Nancy Butler
Howard's End is on the Landing by Susan Hill
The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz
The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon

I would be willing to pay 5 points apiece (7 for international) for the following...

The Annotated Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The Annotated Persuasion by Jane Austen
The Annotated Emma by Jane Austen
Nocturnes - John Connolly (Hardback wanted)
The Passage - Justin Cronin (Hardback wanted)
Beautiful Death by Dean Koontz

Belladonna1975, just a comment on how to acquire these books most effectively. If I wanted to get some of these books, such as The Best of Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet I would notice that each Bookmooch point costs $2.50 to $3.00 assuming that each book you send has a market value of $0.00. So you are looking at $12.50 to $15.00 for 5 points. I notice that there are numerous copies of the Link book available at places like half.com, amazon.com, and bookfinder.com for less than that. So I would go to these sites and not wait for the books to show up on Bookmooch. I also find it helps to list these books in my half.com wishlist so I get emails when somebody is willing to match my price.

Your mileage may vary ...

2> I know that I can get them for "cheaper" by buying them outright, however I currently have 78 points on bookmooch and nothing to "spend" them on. I also have 5+ boxes of books that I would like to post on bookmooch. They are all highly wishlisted books and would go quickly. But in the current climate, I just don't feel comfortable having that many points built up on my account. At the time of the international point increase kerfuffle, I had almost 200 points and went on an international mooching frenzy to get them down to a reasonable level. I do appreciate you pointing out the alternative. I just feel like I have a bank of points just sitting there, I might as well see if I can spend them.

Ah, Belladonna! I just BOUGHT The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making because it was on my list of 'would spend X > 10 points for this' too but it tipped over into the 'all right, all right, I'll buy it, just stop nagging at me!" list. Arrived in the mail just now, actually, go figure.

I don't have any of the others on your list (I have the OTHER Niffenegger book, Her Fearful Symmetry in hardback available), but I'll keep an eye out, as always.

And darnit! You made my wishlist longer again! Enabler!

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making is SPECTACULAR! i was blown away by how much i loved it. hope you guys do too!

i am in a similar boat Belladonna. i don't have as many points but i've got boxes of books i'm NOT posting because i have a hard time finding books i want to mooch... maybe i should make a similar list. although i have a sneaking suspicion that the books i really want are owned by people who aren't willing to give them up...

OH HANG ON. I didn't tag it, but I am fairly certain there is an ARC of The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making in "the Jenn bag" (the storage box was too small ahaha). I'll check the bag when I get back from work and see what I've missed. :)

Ooh, I can't wait then! (well, I have to because I have ER books to read, but after!)

This is my list of books I would spend 3+ points for:
Anything that I don't have by Peter S. Beagle, Ursula K. Le Guin, Robin McKinley, and Tamora Pierce (but you guys all know this already because I go on about them, and indeed, so many of you have filled the previously massive holes in my collections already. I thank you all again for your generosity!)

In long form:

Terrier by Tamora Pierce
Bloodhound by Tamora Pierce
Tortall and Other Lands by Tamora Pierce
got these!

The Stone Fey by Robin McKinley (or Imaginary Lands by Robin McKinley, Ed.)
A Knot in the Grain and Other Stories by Robin McKinley Mooched!

Wild Oats and Fireweed by Ursula K. Le Guin
Hard Words and Other Poems by Ursula K. Le Guin
Cheek by Jowl by Ursula K. Le Guin
Wild Girls by Ursula K. Le Guin

Strange Roads by Peter S. Beagle
Slight of Hand by Peter S. Beagle

(Edited for touchstones that don't)

I have a small build-up of points, but my situation is simply that I don't have the *money* to spend to actually buy these books. Some of them may not be worth 3-5 points, in money-conversion terms, but I have the points. Don't have the money.

So, my list. Will offer 5 points for any of the following:

Don't Call Me Marda by Sheila Kelly Welch
Album of Horses by Marguerite Henry
Another World 35th Anniversary by Julie Poll
Infamous Lady: The True Story of Countess Erzsébet Báthory by Kimberly Craft
Countess Dracula by Michel Parry (tho I see Belladonna got dibs on that, lol!)
Dandelion on My Pillow, Butcher Knife Beneath by Nancy Thomas
The Big Book of Lesbian Horse Stories by Alisa Surkis

Condition doesn't matter as long as it's not falling apart and doesn't have writing/highlighting all over.

Belladonna : Which edition of The Dictionary of Imaginary Places are you looking for?

The one I have was published in Canada in 2001 and contains the 1999 edits. If you are interested I can send you more detailed condition notes.

I actually forgot I had this book.

I don't want to belabor the economic issue too much, but I have a question for those who say they don't have the money to buy books: where do you get the money to mail out Bookmooch books to get the points you want to use?

Let's say that you would have to spend X dollars to buy the books you want. If it costs 2X dollars and much more time to get these books via Bookmooch, where's the benefit to you? I understand that you are subsidizing other Bookmooch members and that may make it worthwhile for you.

11> I am interested! I am looking for any edition in good condition. I gave my like new hardback copy to a friend to "borrow" several years ago. Unfortunately, she is no longer my friend and has absconded with my book! I will message you!

for me, it's mostly the fact that i need to get rid of so many books. the most i can get for them locally is $1. i don't mind donating some books to the library or Goodwill, but i spent a lot of money acquiring these books and it'd be nice to get something in return for some of them.

i buy books still, mostly new releases, but i've built up points because i sent out books and haven't found enough books to mooch because my interests are specific. i'd spend the extra points because they are there already.

15Belladonna1975
Jul 14, 2011, 12:00 pm

12> Let's say someone want a book that costs $10 with shipping. They would have to spend $10 actual dollars that they could be using for groceries or gas instead.

I have a built up cache of $200+ worth of points on bookmooch (using 1 point = $2.50). So, I am using that "money" to buy books instead of using cash.

That is what I think people are saying when they say they can't afford to buy books. (feel free to correct me if I am wrong) :)

For me it is more of a matter of having A LOT of books that need to go onto bookmooch but not wanting to post them yet because I already have so many points already. I am using this thread as a way to thin the herd, so to speak...as well as getting some books I really really want.

16leahbird
Editado: Jul 14, 2011, 1:59 pm

i think a lot of it probably comes down to why/how you use Bookmooch. if you use Bookmooch to acquire books to read and possibly mooch on, or to build up your growing collection, then something like this doesn't make sense.

if, however, you are like me (and belladonna from the sound of it) you use Bookmooch mostly to get rid of books that have built up around the house. i'm doing a massive purge of all unnecessarily things in my life to live more simply and peacefully, and that includes my books. BUT there are books that i want and it would be better if those came from BM since i've already spent the money to send books out to people. for that reason, i don't really care to spend extra points.

as it is, i posted 50 books on BM on my first day 1.5 months ago and they were all mooched within 2 days. i've sent all but 3 of those out, but i've only been able to mooch 3 books, because i'm fairly specific about edition and condition for books i plan to keep. i'd rather offer more points and possibly get books i really want than to see BM as a bad fit for me and cancel my account. especially since i've got around 200 more books to offer...

Jul 14, 2011, 4:42 pm

>12 bertilak: And then there's the whole “yes, but I don't live in the US and books are Not Cheap” thing. Like Belladonna1975, I've got a stack of points and few wishlist hits. And in my case, the postage costs for most of my books sent was paid a while ago, and the cash-poor thing is much more recent (aka mortgage and earthquake). And that's without even going into the whole issue of how people's attitudes to BookMooch and the long-term value of holding on to points has changed …

I do keep books (I'm an unashamed book collector/hoarder/worshiper) though, and have found BM great for giving me access to books that are not readily available in NZ. This thread absolutely rocks! And as soon as my birthday passes and the family-imposed embargo on book purchases passes, I'll be adding my list!

One question though, and keeping #12's question in mind – is this open to people who need points perhaps using Amazon marketplace (or other dealers) to buy books from to send, or are we limiting to ‘books already in my possession’? (She says, planning frantically?)

18Belladonna1975
Jul 14, 2011, 4:59 pm

17> That is an excellent question! I would love it if someone wanted to buy any of the books on my very long list above from somewhere like Amazon marketplace and even having it shipped directly to me (it might be cheaper that way) if they wanted to use this as a way to get more points on bookmooch. My only concern would be about the condition of the books. I am a book horder/collector and the books listed above are ones I would want for my collection. Many Amazon booksellers are very good about listing accurate descriptions but I have gotten my fair share of ex-library and paperback instead of hardback books from Amazon booksellers when I was expecting something else.

19macsbrains
Editado: Jul 14, 2011, 7:26 pm

16> I fall into this category more, or, at least I did until I stayed here for a while :)

I used to buy 90% of my books new, but I had inherited so many books from family and friends, because they (and myself too) could not bring themselves to get rid of them (and around here the libraries usually don't want them and taking them to the bookstore would require a car and a lot of hassle for only a couple of dollars) so the result was that all books of whatever kind were kept. All of them. Everyone's. FOREVER.

And I took all I got my hands on because... well... I have a problem with not hoarding... hehehe *shifty eyes*

But so many of those books I didn't actually want or need, so when I found Bookmooch it was great! All the books could go where they were wanted or needed. I could I could replace all the books in good conscience and still have my hoard library (*my precioussssssssss*).

So yeah, I've spent a lot of money these past couple of years, but by trading rather than just buying I'm happier than Scrooge McDuck in his moneybin (or bookbin in this case) swimming happily amongst my tomes.

So I'll spend extra point on things. I'll make deals and give to BM charities. It is a small price for the goodwill and happiness that I've received to date.

20Heather19
Editado: Jul 14, 2011, 8:18 pm

17: I can't speak for other's preferences, but I've actually asked for that before. A specific book that I wanted, I can't remember the specifics but there was virtually no chance of it ever landing in mainstream bookstores or on BookMooch. I sent out feelers through the BM community and someone bought it for me from Amazon, and I gave them extra points for it.

Since I deliberately buy books at the thrift store from time to time to put in my inventory, I see nothing wrong if people want to buy books to get the extra-offered points!

Regarding the money issue, it really depends on individual situation, where you live, when/how/etc you get money, *and* the availability of the books you are looking for. Every single book I listed up there, are books that I simply *can't* buy. Not available at any bookstore within an hour's drive (believe me, I've done my research!). Some might be available on Amazon, but I can't use Amazon except for that one giftcard I got for my birthday, and I already have two specific books I'm using that on.

If, by some small miracle, one of those books did show up in a bookstore around here, it would be at *least* $20, because I won't even pretend that there is any chance of it showing up in the only actual used bookstore we have. I know the kind of books they stock. Anyways, 5 points at $2-3 a piece is still only, at most, $15. And I'm not even calculating in the gas money in that $20....

I have $25-30 per month (sometimes less, depending on how much I'm able to work) that I can put towards BM shipments. I usually get at *least* 6-8 points for those shipments, if all mooches are domestic, and much more then that if I have even one or two internationals (which I usually do). So no, it's really not worth it to take that shipping money and buy 1 or 2 books from the bookstore, instead of getting 6+ points that I can spend on 6+ books.

(for anyone who caught the fact that I spend money at the thrift store to buy books for my inventory.... It's "fill a bag" for $3. 5-10 books can fit in a bag, depending on thickness.)

21SusieBookworm
Jul 14, 2011, 8:36 pm

#20: I've thought of doing the thrift store thing before, though I more often run into it at library sales and I feel bad taking books that I'm not going to read myself. I've done it once or twice for books to give away on my blog, though, when I've run across books that I really, really enjoyed and can recommend.

You lucky people who have tons of points...I don't even mooch international, as I'm lucky to have more than a point or two at a time (but currently I have FOUR :) ).

My mom has the first two Foxfires and Mrs. Beeton's Book, but I doubt she'd give them up to me to put on BookMooch.

Belladonna1975,

I can send you (not sure when though - may be 3-4 weeks - my post office trips are... a bit problematic)

Pride and Prejudice adapted graphic novel - Nancy Butler
Sense & Sensibility (Marvel Illustrated) - Nancy Butler

Read once and shelved.

I have Emma in single issues (I think... should verify that) -- if you want it just for reading, I can drop you these as well (not that nice on a shelf though). Let me know if you want me to check this as well.

No points needed - I am mostly off BM lately and I need to get some books out of the house...

Let me pull the list of what else I have and do not want anymore (probably will take a week or two) and see if you want something else -- I prefer to send Priority mail and these two won't fill any of the boxes :) If you do not want anything else, that's fine with me

I'm looking for several books by Historian John Keegan, offering 5 bonus points (in addition to normal mooch price) each for any of these:

Soldiers, A History of Men in Battle with Richard Holmes (New York: Viking Press, 1986) ISBN 0-670-80969-1

Fields of Battle: The Wars for North America (1997) ISBN 0-679-74664-1
Intelligence in War: Knowledge of the Enemy from Napoleon to Al-Qaeda (2003) ISBN 0-375-40053-2

Also looking for a few Manga, also at 5 bonus points each:

Lone Wolf and Cub 27 - I'm trying to finish off the series for a local library.
Kaze Hikaru In Japanese - Volume 5 +

and if there are any more Emma manga lying around, I'm looking for Volumes 7 & 8, any condition (but Belladonna1975 gets first dibs.)

I am off on a business trip next week so probably won't have a list before almost the end of the month. Hopefully that works for you?

24> GreyGhost - is the paperback edition (1990, Penguin) of The Price of Admiralty of interest? I have it - want to read it but I doubt I'll want to keep it afterward.

I have several others in paperback, too, but I don't want to give them up (Pierce and Moon, mostly!). I do see them in bookstores now and then, but rarely in hardback. Specifically:
The Deed of Paksenarrion
Good Omens
(Belladonna, atlargeintheworld - are you at all interested in the paperbacks? I don't have them to spare, but can look for them in used book stores if you are.)

Terrier
Bloodhound
A Knot in the Grain
I have seen all of these in local used book shops in the past few months - Bloodhound possibly as a hardback but the other two definitely as paperbacks. macsbrains, interested? I'll keep an eye out if you are.

Of course, this is kind of pointless - I have some 30 points on BM and have had no (useful) wishlist hits in a long time. I've gotten some recently through this group, though (thanks, geophile! They just came in and I marked them received just now). Whatever.

#39 by bookel> after i posted that i went back and checked and it wasn't quite 50 books. i posted 50 books and 35 were mooched so fast that i removed the others until i could get the ones i'd accepted already cleared out. still, 35 books in 2 days was insane and overwhelming. i was REALLY surprised because. since none of them were the "most mooched" type books, maybe people were like me and watching their lists in the hopes they'd be posted.

Not surprising if you're in the USA. I've never even received 35 requests in such a short time! Longer yes... I'm kind of confused when your BookMooch profile only says 17 received.

i have another account for books that aren't actually mine. mostly they are my mom and grandmother's and i'm posting them since they aren't techy. i just didn't want to get them mixed up with my personal mooches. plus i have some currently en route that were from the initial batch- i warned everyone up front that it would be a while before they all went out because there were so many and i was strapped for time and money at the moment.

(i checked your inventory in the hopes of being able to send some points your way but didn't recognize any of the titles. i'll keep checking back though!)

The Confident Woman by Joyce Meyer

it seems to go in cycles for me. about 10 days ago, I had a lot of wishlisted books I was able to mooch and since, then... dry as the Sahara Desert! I still have around 300 points I want to spend down. Financially there is a limit to how much I am willing to give away to charities. After all, they represent a huge investment on my part.

Please TPTB: don't make any more changes until I have a chance to get to a more reasonable level!

How has this thread gone a month with no additions?!
My birthday has been and gone, so I am free to post here. Hooray! So if you’re points-poor, this could be your lucky day.

All are paperbacks, and as many are poetry collections (and hence quite thin and light) you should be able to send them for fairly low postage costs. More books for me, more points for you! (She said, hopefully.)
Links are to the BookMooch page, since that has the recent US Amazon marketplace prices. Most books are American, with a decent chunk of UK and the rest Australian.
I’m looking for very good to excellent condition – definitely nothing with missing pages or writing/highlighting in the text, or that smells strongly of cigarettes. (Amazon marketplace’s Very Good and up is usually a safe bet.)
I prefer the editions listed, but if you come across one in very good condition in a different edition (US versus UK printing or vice versa) then I’ll probably still leap upon it with loud cries of joy. You may just want to check with me first.

I will pay 5 points (international - I'm in the Netherlands) for the River Cottage books that I don't have already:
The River Cottage Cookbook,
River Cottage Every Day,
The River Cottage Family Cookbook,

and 6 points for The River Cottage Meat book.

And if I get River Cottage Veg Every Day I will definitely smooch the guy, but I am not quite sure it will work out, so that might still be added to the list.
ETA: I didn't get it yet, so it's still wanted.

And while I am trying to get those cookbooks I have been wanting for ages: I will also pay 5 points for:
Fat: An Appreciation of a Misunderstood Ingredient,
Roasting-A Simple Art
,
The Roasted Vegetable

and Honest Pretzels (thin!).

I don't care about the edition, or paperback or hardcover. I do want good enough condition - no loose pages, no large stains. I will smooch/charity the points on receipt of the books.

HI; I peaked at your BM wishlist and then jumped on PBS...Yes these are different sites with pros and cons. I am not saying one is better than another; they are different but a quick glance of about 10 books found by the ISBN listed on your wishlist on BM

An Assembly Such as This (Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman: Book 1)
Louisa May Alcott The Inheritance
Louisa May Alcott Little Women (Puffin Classics)
Isabel Allende Daughter of Fortune (Oprah's Book Club)
Julia Alvarez In the Time of the Butterflies

all available; the other 5 books were on people wishlists.

The nice thing about PBS is you can sign up and buy credits in the book bazaar (under discussions) for about 2.50 each. Not a bad price for a used book and you never have to ship a book out either :)

So if you are really tired of waiting; you might be able to get a book or two quite cheap.

Have fun.

Editado: Out 31, 2011, 4:28 pm

thanks for checking! i signed up for PBS a few weeks ago and listed some things to see if they were available and nothing was jumping out then (it was, to be fair, a small sample) so i put that on hold. i'm very hesitant to make any changes when i still have points to use at BM, but if i can ever get these points down then i'm pretty likely to move to PBS for some things. i just hate seeing the money i've already spent tied up and not usable.

Out 31, 2011, 6:03 pm

Take a few of the books you posted at PBS & put them on your reminder list. You can then see how many copies are available on PBS.

The policy is FIFO, but for those members who have the "Gold Key" membership, the PBS member who is closest geographically & quick-sending will be chosen to send the book.

Example: If I request The Da Vinci Code and live in Boston, MA, and you listed the book and you live in Cambridge, MA, then I would most likely get that very popular book from you. (I got the GK to get the extra wishlist spots)

So, if you can afford to send books out, keep yourself off hold/vacation and you should get requests.

(I recently requested a book with a few copies available & it came from the next town over from me!! NOT in FIFO!)

>80 Sandydog1: Well you can now post 300 books if you pay for the gold key membership. Or what I do is post 200 to my wishlist where there are other wishers for the book and then dump the rest on your reminder list and just check it each day like you would bookmooch--if there are no wishers you have the same odds as you would on bm

at this moment on my reminder list are 10 books i can order; if i had the points :)

82leahbird
Nov 16, 2011, 12:25 am

#80 by Sandydog1> yeah, i don't love that either, but it's workable. the thing i'm having a bit of annoyance with is that the request system isn't as transparent as BM. i have basically no information for the 2 books i requested. at first they just said something like "the member has 48 hours to acknowledge this request" and now it says they have until the 17th to post the book to receive points, but there is no clear acknowledgement that they've agreed to send the book to me. i'm ASSUMING that they are since the note has changed, but it would be nice if it was straight-forward like it is on BM.

i'd also rather receive points as soon as i mark a book as sent. i know they offer that if you pay the postage on the site, but i choose not to pay for postage with a credit card, so i have to wait for the points until the recipient acknowledges they received the book. what if they forget when they get it? i don't want to have to wait a whole month to receive points when it means books i want might get snatched up in that time.

basically, i LOVE the availability but i don't love the system.

83RidgewayGirl
Nov 16, 2011, 7:24 am

The system takes some getting used to. It's not better or worse, just different. I've found that I still get most of my books from BM, because I'm willing to check my wishlist everyday.

The PBS system requires more patience, and I prefer the easy communication on BM. Just don't list books on both sites unless you're very careful and able to remove them from the other site immediately. The only books I list on both sites are books where there are more than 10 copies available on PBS, and even then I'm nervous.

84rxtheresa
Nov 16, 2011, 6:32 pm

>82 leahbird: I use USPS Shipping Assistant available free at the USPS website. You can still go to the PO and pay for your postage which I do. I like it because it is only 18 cents for delivery confirmation so I put it on all my mail outs. Still a lot cheaper than buying postage and dc at the PBS website. If people forget to mark the book received (and sometimes they do) I just copy and paste my delivery confirmation information in a pm to them. Every time I've done that people respond within a day and mark their book received.

85leahbird
Nov 17, 2011, 12:22 am

so... apparently "Waiting for member" really does mean "waiting for member." one of the books i requested changed from that to "Accepted" tonight, which i'm happy about. but now i'm more confused. before, it said they had until the 17th to mark the book as sent and now it says they have until the 21st. that doesn't seem quite right to me.
