This will appeal to those who enjoy slam poetry or want to learn about it or who want to support Chicago area public school kids in learning writing and performance skills. Also those who like good documentaries.

This fundraiser for Young Chicago Authors will be held on Friday, November 4th at Victory Gardens Biograph Theater from 6:30-9:30pm. Tickets are $50./person - $25./students. You can contact Young Chicago Authors for tickets at www.youngchicagoauthors.org - or call 773 486-4331 X11.

"Louder Than a Bomb" is an award-winning documentary of YCA's poetry slam of the same name. Producer/directors Jon Siskel and Greg Jacobs follow four high school poetry teams as they prepare for and compete in LTAB, the largest youth poetry slam in the world. It's an amazing and moving documentary. It has been showcased at several film festivals around the country. Disclosure: my son was on one of the featured teams, and my wife heads up YCA's Board.

After the screening and a short reception, Chicago radio hall of famer Rick Kogan moderates a discussion with Siskel and Jacobs, Kevin Coval (co-founder of LTAB and artistic director of YCA), Robbie Q. Telfer (LTAB director and The Reader's Best Local Poet 2011) and some of the young poets from the slam.

If this sounds appealing, it would be fun to see you there!

- Joe
