I'm a fan of the older classics and favored series, but I'm curious what has come out recently that people are fans of? I'm still out of the loop in anime and manga, and whenver I ask for suggestions, I'm given titles from 2004-2006.
I'm a fan of CLAMP, Takahashi Rumiko, Tanemura Arina, Yazawa Ai, but I also like shonen manga, and am gaining an interest in historical topics as well.

It is possible that part of the reason you are getting so few suggestions for recently published manga is that in the past couple years several of the largest publishers have either cut back their offerings or just gone out of business completely, leaving fans who were already collecting their publications in the lurch. Tokyopop closed, Del Rey was bought out by Kodansha, DC killed its CMX manga line... the whole industry is very unstable right now.
That said, there are still new things coming out, you just have to look a little harder for them. VIZ is still publishing, and you can look on their webpage for ideas. http://store.viz.com/ And as always, Amazon is still a good resource. I often get ideas from their "Also Bought" lists.
A few things I have bought lately are
Shojo:
Bride of the Water God
Bride's Story
Dengeki Daisy
Shonen:
Itsuwaribito
Nura:Rise of the Yokai Clan
Hope this helps a little. Good luck with your collecting!

for historical topics you can try
Emma by Kaoru Mori which is set in late Victorian England (although its getting hard to find full sets as it was a CMX imprint but might be luck and find it at library or you local comic/manga shop)
A Brides Story also by Kaoru Mori and set in the 19th century around the Caspian Sea
Spice & Wolf (i usually recommend the light novels but the manga is good as well) not historic per-say but I think gives a good feeling of late medieval early Renaissances world albeit slightly romanticized.
Like ninja said the industry is unstable right now so not pickings for new stuff can be slim but there is still a lot of good stuff out there.
check out Yen Press http://www.yenpress.com/series/ they are in my opinion one of the best company's out there at the moment. Also they just started publishing CLAMPs Kobato
hopes this helps some as well
