Book events in the UK

Here`s your chance to plug any book events you know of that others might like - whether local or national, whether you`re an organiser otr just interested.

The Manchester Literature Festival, 4th- 14th October

October is a busy month it's also when we have our food & drink festival!

If Manchester is the wrong end of the country, there's also the Cheltenham Literature Festival, 5th-14th October.

Oh, Manchester Public Libraries are running a competition to come up w/a design for a Book Bag. The prize is £50 Waterstone's vouchers *yumyum

My goodness what geography!! Manchester is near Ramsbottom which is the centre of Britain. Now I live in Inverness I know what it's like to live at the edge.

"Centre of Britain" or not, Manchester is surely in the North of England.

I thought, with the Hay Book Festival in full swing (until 6th June), and kicking off a summer of more, this would be as good a time as any to revive this groovy topic idea. Or try to. Smaller events I'm especially interested in myself, especially those in Wales, which I may even be able to get to.

I'm off to Hay this morning for a full week of fun! I can't wait!

As others have said, the Cheltenham Festival is very good, as is Bath. There's also a mini-Hay-weekend in the winter (I think usually in December).

And next month I'm trying the first annual Thame Lit Fest.

Enjoy! I'm headed up there for the one day this year. Have added Cheltenham and Bath and Thame (had to Google that one) to diary, though a smidge far off....will see. =)

The South Bank Centre has a series of events in the first half of July branded the London Literature Festival, but anyone who has ever been to a genuine literature festival will know it is a pretty poor specimen. Star attraction as far as I'm concerned this summer is Bret Easton Ellis launching his new novel but there's nothing else of interest as far as I can see.

London's best festival is Jewish Book Week, which is at the end of February in the Royal National Hotel off Russell Square. Although there are events squarely aimed at the community, I'd say the likes of Lionel Shriver, Will Self and Jonathan Safran Foer, all of whom were at the 2010 festival, would have a pretty universal appeal.

The Hampstead literary festival made its debut last September with Sebastian Faulks as its star attraction, but I've no idea if it is happening again this year.

...and thanks for reviving it just in time to remind everybody that this week is the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Sadly for me, my studies prevent me from attending this year.
