I've wanted to read this book for a while now. I'll check my library and see if it's available. :)

I'll probably join in, too.

Oooh, I've read that. I can't quite put my finger on why I prefer Rose Daughter by McKinley, which is another retelling of the same tale. I think there was nothing I didn't like in Beauty but just so many things I loved about Rose Daughter. I'd be interested to hear from others who also read both!

I've read both and preferred Beauty. I liked Rose Daughter as well, and found it different enough from Beauty so I wasn't disappointed (I REALLY liked Beauty) but it was also a tch too dream-like for me. They're both on my to reread list, as soon as I get copies of my own.

#4 -- My opinion on the two books is the exact opposite of yours. :-)
Beauty is one of my favorite books ever . . . I just reread it earlier this year, so perhaps I will drop in on the discussion now and then.

I can exactly put my finger on why I prefer Beauty over Rose Daughter. I've never been able to quite figure out the plot of Rose Daughter...

This is one of my favorite versions of this story and I don';t know anyone else in my RL who has read it.
I'm really looking forward to the conversations here.

Haven't read it and have actually never heard of it... But... Beauty and the Beast is one of my favourite fairy tales, so I do feel like I should join. Which will depend on whether I'll be able to obtain a copy of it...

I've been doing a lot of thinking about fairy tales recently...and I realized that Beauty and the Beast was my favorite too. I never knew that until now though. :) Just never thought about it before. It wasn't my favorite of the Disney movies, and I guess when I was younger that's what I associated with the story. (I liked the movie, just not as much as Little Mermaid, Aladdin, etc.)
I just looked up what everyone is talking about. McKinley wrote TWO retellings of Beauty and the Beast? Like 20 years apart? How odd. But, original. I'll have to read both and see how they compare. It must be one of her favorites, too.

I love, love, love this book! I admire and appreciate Rose daughter, but Beauty holds a special place in my heart.

I cheated a bit and read Beauty this weekend.
I needed a quick, light read and this did the trick. Rachel, I think that's a cool idea to read Rose Daughter, too. I think I'll join you in that.

I'm reading Beauty right now and it's an absolute delight. I think it's going to be my favorite for the challenge so far.

I'll have to put this on my re-read list.

I love them both (McKinley is one of my favorite "fairy story" authors) but I read Beauty first, and while certain parts of Rose Daughter are fascinating, I will always love Beauty best.

Perhaps it's time for the spoiler thread? **sitting on hands, trying to be patient**
