One of the worst books I've had the misfortune to read is Mirabilis by Susann Cockal. The story is about an outcast in 14th century France who makes a living as a wetnurse. The plot is overwrought and absurd. The author might have pulled it off if she had limited the "bizarre" to one or two elements but she crammed the book full of weird people, weird happenings, weird scenes. Every situation felt forced and unbelievable. In the end, all I could think was "yuck." (Well, that and "Did I really pay money for this book?") It's dreadful, and not in a good, fun way.
