I really don't like this headline. Not a pedant thing, it's just a nasty use of language. "Film's ..." - Ugh!

Yes, it's ugly, and seems unnecessary. If they are really afraid that people visiting the BBC News site won't remember who he was, they could just as easily say "Actor and director Richard Attenborough..."

I agree. Annoying but not pedantry. Similarly I hate: (some male celebrity's) "latest squeeze".

It's in the same category as curious expressions like "Football thinks...."
