67. A Bachelor Girl in Burma by G. E. Mitton

I have a good excuse for not reading much this past month. I have been travelling in Singapore and Rangoon, helping to save the historical Armenian church in Rangoon, the church of my ancestors. I met the head of the Armenian Church, His Holiness Karekin II, his priests and travelled with the entourage of international businessmen and diplomats. I was interviewed by the BBC (sadly not broadcast because of developments with the pseudo-priest that wanted to sell the property the church stands on.) I was at official dinners. I travelled around Rangoon in the entourage, complete with motorcycle outriders, sirens and official photographers and videographers. That's beside the paparazzi that followed us.

The Armenian group welcomed me like a sister and treated me like an equal. They would not accept my self-evaluation of being "just a housewife with her nose in a book." And in the end, despite the slimy pseudo-priest hanging on, prevaricating with negotiators and threatening me personally with the Yangon Police, we won!
I am gradually writing up all the intrigues on my blog,, as and when I can legally reveal the goings on, but one of my friends has said, quite rightly, Hollywood could not make this up.

So the above book was bought at Bagan Books in Yangon. In Myanmar they have a habit of photocopying and binding old books completely ignoring copyright laws, but it does help to get English books out to the readers. This book was about an unmarried woman's journey around Burma in 1907, along with an unwieldy camera. She describes everything so well you almost don't need her photographs.

I'm not accepting your self evaluation as "just" an anything either!
