My eleven-year old is a keen reader who has recently assimilated his peers' fascination with all things modern military (20th-21st century).

War stories aren't my thing so I've no experience to draw on. I'd appreciate any recommendations for in-print stand-alone or series books.

Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac and Sunrise over Fallujah by Walter Dean Myers both come to mind, but I'd suggest having a look at them before handing them over to an 11-yr-old as they're both young adult books.

I recently read Code Name Verity, and it was great! You might want to read it yourself first to make sure it's not too graphic for your kid (it's war, some people get killed).

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo might be a good one if he's interested in WWI. It's been a while since I've read it, but I don't recall it featuring anything too graphic for an eleven year old to handle.

Heinlein's Space Cadet and Starship Troopers are classic sci-fi, but the military aspects are very interesting. Both were written as YA. They have aged, but I still enjoy them.

Still in the SciFi category, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are very oriented to-11 year-olds and military-esque life. I read them not so long a go and they were good.

I second the Heinlein books.
