Since I do not remember any of the character names or location names I will try to write about important events but i may have mixed up the chronological order of them but if any event sticks out please help. Its not to much to go on but i hope some event u may find u can relate to. The events below may be spanning 2 or 3 books of the same series.

So the book starts with the guy awaiting judgement because it has been discovered he can use magic. A magic user (lets say Master for the sake of reference) interferes and takes him as a student. There is an island where magic is taught and the Master decides to take our hero there.

On the way there by sea they are met with a huge storm which is actually made up magically to assault the ship to kill the Master. The Master is becomes suspicious of the storm and his suspects one of his former student was responsible for it. The Master tells the hero that he may not be able to stop the storm by himself and will need the hero's power as a boost.

They reach the said island where magic is taught. Over here the hero learns about magic. The ability that stands the most out is shape shifting where one is able to change his/her shape with magic. During his time there he once gets attacked by the Master's former student and the former student almost kills the hero in the attack. The former gets to know the memories of the hero and expresses disgust over his falling in love with a cripple. The former student plants a demon seed in the hero's mind.

Also during his time in the school the hero fells in love with one of his teachers. The said teacher is a cripple but can magically change her shape into a bird. At the end of the first or second book the teacher dies in an attack that is commanded by the Master's former student who sends demon to attack the school.

There is also a she elf who may have been falling in love with the hero but he does not realize. The she elf is a healer and helps remove a demonic taint from the hero's. (The process of putting the demonic taint may be known as reeving). After the hero's lover dies the elf moves back to her homeland. There her father wants her to marry another elf so that their house could be strengthened and she could take her place on the council. But the she elf has reservations about marrying and by the end of the book she does something which forces the court to accept her as she is.

Also the world is under threat. The veil which separate the world from the other world(dark/fae) is thinning.

Several aspects remind me of Barbara Hambly, particularly her Dog Wizard series. But I don't remember an island, or a demon seed, or a crippled teacher, or even shape shifting - just the illegal magic bit, and possibly intervention by someone who then becomes the teacher/Master. And the threat from other worlds - a common thread in Hambly's books. Might be worth checking out.

And on the other side - the island part makes me think of A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula LeGuin. I haven't read these, so don't know if any of the rest applies.

A Wizard of Earthsea was my first thought too but sadly the rest of the story does not match with it.

Songs of the Earth by Elspeth Cooper. The Wild Hunt series.

Novice Knight Gair can hear music no one else can, beautiful, terrible music: music with power. In the Holy City, that can mean only one thing: death by fire—until an unlikely intervention gives him a chance to flee the city and escape the flames.

With the Church Knights and their witchfinder hot on his heels, Gair hasn’t time to learn how to use the power growing inside him, but if he doesn’t master it, that power will tear him apart. His only hope is the secretive Guardians of the Veil, though centuries of persecution have almost destroyed their Order, and the few Guardians left have troubles of their own.

"Savin tried to take hold of your mind, from the inside. When he attacked you by the Five Sisters, he left something behind in your head, a seed of his will, so that he could get back in whenever he wanted. We managed to destroy it."

"Tanith called it a reiving — like a cattle raid, but inside my head. She says it will heal in time."
