Went up north to the library sale on Weds, holy cow that was nuts. No wonder they don't do that often, it's a warehouse storage thing and it's chaos! We actually had to wait in line as they only allow so many people in at once. So of course there were morons near the back just standing around chatting not doing anything with the books, ugh! Anywaaaay they had ZERO English or French titles, I guess they save those for the Hendrik Conscience sale in spring?, since I know I've seen some from the other libraries when looking through those! So that was a bust. But. Hubs picked up 2 books to give his dad, on old cultures with lots of photos, one on Crete and the other Mayan. And he picked up an Antwerpse dictionary lol. And I, I made out bigtime, hahaha. I got:
Tijd van leven and De vriendschap by Dean Koontz
De maan van de rode paarden by James Lee Burke
De overlevers club by Lisa Gardner
jongen, meisje, verloren by Peter Straub
Piraten by Michael Crichton
All of which I own save the last, so I will be able to (re)read them side by side to help me out, and unless they've gotten rid of it since, the library has the Crichton. I'll save it for last, once I get to the point of being able to read them. You can see their proper titles in the touchstone list on the sidebar ;)
And then I raided the YA section for easier to read stuff. Picked out:
Despereaux (which I haven't read in English but hey, it's supposed to be good right, why not try in Dutch xD)
Heksenstreken by Mary Schoon, (witches something, I forget what the 2nd half means) which has amusing witches dancing on the cover
De trol met negen hoofden by Walter Soethoudt (The troll with nine heads), which has an intriguing title & cover so I had to xD
Avonturen van Baron van Münchhausen retold by Heleen Kernkamp-Biegel, because I've actually never read it so why not try in children's Dutch first? lol
Vigo Vampier: Het bos van Bloedbaard by Mirjam Mous, because who wouldn't be intrigued by Vigo Vampire and the forest of Bloodbeard?? The cover has a boy & girl in capes flying in the air above trees. hahaha.
Het geheim van De Drie Moren by Jaap Janssen (The secret of The Three Moors), De Drye Mooren (old spelling) apparently was an inn back in the 1600s where some murder took place, and this is some kind of novelized account of it, aimed for kids 10+.
Het raadsel in het fluisterbos by Kathleen Vereecken, some sort of mystery, the cover has a boy & girl in a creepy yard? looking in a window at a tiger, gorilla, small monkey, and flamingo. Curious! xP
Gouden Sterren by Lois Lowry, such an amazing book. I saw her name and the title and was like NOWAI it isn't! *checks inside oorspronkelijke titel Number the Stars* Zomg it is!! so of course I had to snag it. I'll see if I can't get my mom to locate my old copy so I can have the English to read with. :D
Hitlers Kanarie by Sandi Toksvig, Danish Nazi-WWII historical fic, seemed possibly interesting!
Het was een donkere en stormachtige nacht (you can probably make out the title of that one ;)) It's a collection of tales for reading aloud to kids, and it just looked nice so I was like Yah! but then I looked over the contents at home and was like holy crap this looks amazing! It's got a ton of fabulous authors and off the top of my head the only thing I actually remember is that it has the Lilliputian section from Gulliver's Travels but I kept reading down the list of names going What?! WHOA! Omg no way! and such lmao so yeah. And it's also like, brand new, goodness knows why they sold it off! Mine now! <3
And also 4 comic books (2 Smurfs, an Asterix, and some other one I'm unfamiliar with my husband picked) I don't have next to me.
Oh and Clive Barker's Book of Blood DVD.

Everything €1 except the comics that were 25cents. So that whole pile for €21, nice score!

If I remember to, I will share the fun covers when I get them added to my catalog, which I've not yet done. :P

Wow .Monkey. you did well!
I love the sound of some of those covers. Please share soon. I often buy a book just because the cover appeals to me.
I wish I could read Dutch but sadly I only studied German, French and Latin as my major subjects.
However, I often feel I want to buy books in other languages in the hope that one day I will learn a new language and be good enough at it to at least get the gist of a short story or similar.
You must have been clicking your heels together on your way home from that sale!
Thank you for sharing your haul!

Haha, yeah, it was a nice haul, I'm glad to have some things on hand for when I progress a bit more! I'm sure there were TONS of other equally good (or better) titles of the kids bunch but we really had nothing to go on there, I don't know any Dutch/Belgian children's authors and my husband doesn't know many either, he's more familiar with the somewhat older range and even then, he, like me, was reading regular adult novels from a young age as well. So we really just poked around at random and I took a few that looked/sounded cute/interesting, lol.

I have a few Russian titles for that reason, which ONE DAY! I will be able to read, hahaha.

My online buys finally arrived! A friend on another site had mentioned reading (and glowingly reviewed) a Denise Mina book, so I looked into her and then asked said friend about her earlier trilogy and was told it was excellent, so I found some nice inexpensive 2nd-hand copies of the Garnethill trilogy over on Abe, 1 & 3 from one seller, 2 from another. :)

At the same time, I bought 4 insanely cheap used books on Italian learning off Amazon sellers (blech, amazon, but sellers! lol), as well as 7 books from Abe sellers, 4 volumes of the World Literature and Its Times series (African, Spanish & Portuguese, Middle Eastern, and Latin American), plus Shelf Life: Fantastic Stories Celebrating Bookstores, Nightmares and Geezenstacks, and Stories Not for the Nervous, all of which are pit-stopping by my mom in the US before they come to me, and apparently the lit volumes are rather huge and weighty, so it'll be a while before I have all those, lol.

>4 .Monkey.: .Monkey.: Well done you! And yes, I use Amazon too. I know people have issues with them but for me I need to buy cheaply and often and apart from a couple of bad experiences, I have always been more than happy with the sellers' abilities to complete the transactions in a timely and efficient manner.
I think I have one Denise Mina book on my shelves at the moment. I believe it's called Exile. I have always heard good things about her books so I need to find a small window in my reading regime for next year to possibly fit her in.

Well, the weather here in Shetland is absolutely horrid, so I'm going to settle down with the book I'm reading at the moment, Clara Callan. Enjoying it immensely. Hubby and the cat have fallen asleep on the couch..........again!

Exile is actually book#2 of the Garnethill ones, so don't read it before finding Garnethill! XD

I have big problems with amazon, on many levels, but unfortunately, their size makes them pretty much the top locale for sellers to list their items, so when I'm looking for something particular, in a non-someday sense, they're one of the places I typically need to check. Fortunately, I don't often need particular titles so I'm able to just pick things up that've been on my "list" from local shops when I come across them. :)

I drove 45 minutes this morning to stick my head in a community library book sale, and came out with a couple of satisfying finds: a Penguin edition of Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, In Search of America and The State of the Art, an anthology of stories by Iain Banks. I've always had an eye on his science fiction Culture series, but have never dipped into one. This anthology includes 8 stories and his essay "A Few Notes on the Culture," providing background information on that series. Both of my books are paperbacks in very fine condition for a bargain price. I was pleased.

Oooh, sorry, Monkey! I didn't realize I posted this on your list. Sorry for the innocent intrusion ..!

>10 .Monkey.:: Well done you! That sounds like a nice variety. I haven't read any of those. I'm hoping to go into town tomorrow and have a mooch around a couple of charity shops. So watch this space :)

Yup, all classics of one sort or another, but definitely an eclectic collection. :P
