Welcome to TBR Challenge and to LT - two great places to be! A Game of Thrones is on my lists this year as well.

Welcome aboard! Musketeers are on my (not yet posted) list as well, a carryover from last time. A handful of your others are on my plan to read someday list as well, haha. And Treasure Island I just read a couple mos ago, fun story. House of Leaves is...a unique experience. :P

Awesome to see a new face. Moby Dick is in contention for my favourite novel ever. Uncle Tom's Cabin is an interesting historical artifact. I'm trying to get to know Terry Pratchett a little better. Shogun was a major mountain climb in high school and I have fond memories.

Treasure Island is best read while keeping in mind that it created most of the pirate cliches and isn't to blame for weilding them. I have that Hemingway on TBR. Very excited to see the New Sun, that's a puzzle if ever there was one in fantasy. House of Leaves didn't measure up for me, but it's still fun. And of course, the Game of Thrones - I get to watch as three of you tackle that one, should be fun!

Nice mix of books. Good Luck! For GoT, write notes until you remember who the characters are! It does get confusing at first!

Great list, there's some stuff I really love there. Enjoyed The Three Musketeers (though I will admit to preferring The Count of Monte Cristo) and The Long Earth. Also The Great Gatsby is one of my top ten favourite books of all time and is really readable IMO, so that should be good fun.

Treasure Island is just amazingly good fun too which will be a good contrast with Flowers for Algernon (which is great, but much more serious). A bunch of those others are also on my TBR so I'll be really interested to see how you respond to them!

Welcome! Great list, I also have Gatsby on my list this year. Unlike many others, I really enjoyed House of Leaves. I sometimes enjoy the experimental, sometimes gimmicky, formats (although in my opinion Brian Selznick does it better).

Old Man and the Sea is highly sentimental to me, as I actually got to meet the old man who inspired the story, Gregorio Fuentes. I went to Cuba in 2000, and he lives in one of the small seaside towns near a bar that Hemingway frequented (he was also a captain of Hemingway's fishing boat). At the time I met him at his home, he was 102!

Thanks for the welcome, I have books piles all over the family room! My husband thinks I'm nuts!! Now to get somewhat organized.

>9 artturnerjr:, if so, it's only because I know what a great hook it has and there's a painful wait for the rest of the series after the fifth book. Or, you can torture yourself deciding if you want to keep watching the HBO version before the rest is published. It's fun either way.

No, in spite of the accolades that have been piled upon the TV series, I'm determined to read the books first. If I had only become aware of the books recently, I might feel differently about it, but I've actually wanted to read the books since before there was a TV series.

>12 artturnerjr:, I always feel obliged to make a similar statement about books Oprah 'discovers' and turns into a thing when in fact my interest predated all that. I feel like a stooge when it's made to look as if I'm just following the herd.

I havn't seen any of the TV series, have to read the books, before I watch any "made from" movies or TV.

>14 Book-Dragon1952:

Yeah, I am generally the same way. I got a copy of the Coen Brothers' film version of Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men last year (it was two bucks at Amazon - couldn't pass it up) - still haven't watched it, as I've been waiting until after I read the book to do so. I was hoping to squeeze it onto my 2016 TBR lists, but as I wasn't able to, I probably won't see it until 2017. Crazy, isn't it?

Welcome! Flowers for Algernon was one of my favorite reads from 2014 - hope it's one that gets crossed off your list next year.

Treasure Island was great fun as I loved all the pirate tropes.

Shogun is on my TBR shelf and one that my parents dearly loved. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as they did.

I'm also hoping to finally read something by Terry Pratchett next year though he is not on my offical TBR challenge list.

>14 Book-Dragon1952:, me too, reading before watching. Often the movie can be disappointing. I found the recent movie of Pride and Prejudice unwatchable right after having read it.

Somehow I missed Flowers for Algernon on your list, that's a good one too. There's a movie of that one I haven't seen yet.

>17 Book-Dragon1952:

It's supposed to be excellent. I have yet to see a film by the Coens that I didn't like, so I'll probably enjoy it after I finally get around to reading the book lol

My DVD collection is getting pretty big, although nowhere near as large as my print book and music collections. I am currently in the process of slowly, slowly cataloging my music collection here on LT. When I get done with that (which will be sometime in the 2020s, at the rate I'm going), I'll probably start in on my DVDs.

>19 Cecrow: et al

We've talked about this here before, but yeah, watching before reading = not good. The thing about seeing a movie before you read the book is that you can't ever unsee it. If you see the film version of The Shining first, you will see Jack Nicholson's face every time Jack Torrance is mentioned; If you see the Lord of the Rings movies first, you will always picture Elijah Wood as Frodo. And so on and so on, ad infinitum et ultra.

I missed Flowers for Algernon, too. The movie's okay, but not nearly as good as the book. Having said that, I'm partial 'cause the book is an all-time favorite of mine. Make sure you're stocked up on Kleenex before starting.

Last night I was starting to gather the books I reading in January, I look at Moby Dick and find the print is microscoptic! I'd have to read it with magnifer. So off to the book store, found a Moby with larger print, and 6 other books. My TBR bookcase just keeps growing. I thought I was reducing it!

Do you have an eBook reader? You can download a copy of it online (for free, actually*) and adjust the font size to whatever's comfortable to you. You'll save shelf space that way, too. :)

Just now checking in, and you have a great list! Moby Dick is one of my all-time favorite books. I loved the whole thing.

Also, as a big Cormac McCarthy fan, I just wanted to mention that No Country for Old Men is both a great read and a great movie. McCarthy is my favorite author right now, so I try to read one of his books each year.

>24 Book-Dragon1952:

I still have tons of print books that I haven't cataloged, either. As I've said on my profile page, I value LT's automatic recommendation system quite a bit, so if I have a book that is iffy, I generally don't catalog it. Garbage in, garbage out, as the IT people say.

28Book-Dragon1952
Dez 23, 2015, 9:58 pm

>I like that "garbage in, garbage out". I really should cull some of the books I know I will never reread. It seems that my tastes have changed over the years, and I now read different genres than in my younger years. My only consist reads are sci-if. A lot of non-fiction lately. Change is good.

>28 Book-Dragon1952:

I find I am still drawn to the same sorts of genres (science fiction, fantasy, horror, superhero) that I was in my teens and twenties, although I am now more interested in exploring the roots of those genres than I was when I was younger. I've also gotten more interested in autobiographies and memoirs as I've grown older; I find I prefer a person's own account of their lives rather than hearing a secondhand version from someone else.

I really fell off the track! Couldn't keep up with recording books read. I will try to do better next year. List fewer books. I really want to keep track of what I read. Did a lot of rereading this summer, all the Harry Potter Books, the Fablehaven Series, The Five Kingdoms series, the Beyonders Series, The Maze Runner Series, The Hunger Games Series. So I did get some reading done this year!

31Cecrow
Set 26, 2016, 7:22 am

Great that you have so many favourites that call to you like that - and that you read so fast. I'd probably do some re-reading too if I was quicker. When you're a slower reader, it feels like all you have time for is to chip away at the mountain of books you haven't scaled yet.

32.Monkey.
Set 26, 2016, 8:10 am

I'm a fast reader - when interested by the book. But I still never reread because there's way too much else out there.

You've read quite a lot of books. By the way, what did you think of the Maze Runner series? I have it on my kindle.

34Book-Dragon1952

>33 billiejean: The Maze Runner is a YA series, apocalyptic, also the first two books were made into movies. I enjoyed the series and the premise. I am now reading the fifth book in the series, a prequel The Fever Code by James Dashner.
