the first recorded air attack on an enemy vessel or fleet involving aerial torpedoes was an attack on the German Battle Cruiser Goeben when it was aground in the Aegean Sea in 1918. Light bombers failed to hit the stationary target.
The direct forerunner was the attack on the Italian Fleet when it lay at its naval base at Taranto, the night of 11-12 November of by 21 torpedo bombers of the Royal Navy. It was quite successful, sinking one battleship completely and placing two others under repair for long periods. 2 Swordfish torpedo bombers were lost.
