Composer Pierre Boulez died January 5 at the age of 89. His books include Orientations: Collected Writings and Boulez on Music Today.

Composer Elizabeth Swados died January 5 at the age of 64. She wrote Hey You! C'mere! A Poetry Slam, At Play: Teaching Teenagers Theater and My Depression: A Picture Book.

Jazz pianist Paul Bley died January 3 at the age of 83. His memoir was called Stopping Time: Paul Bley and the Transformation of Jazz.

Andre Turcat was the chief test pilot for the Concorde SST program who flew the Concorde on its maiden flight and was the first to take it past twice the speed of sound. He died on January 4 at the age of 94. He wrote Concorde. Essais d'hier, battailles d'aujourdui.

Very sorry to learn that Gillian Avery died at 89 on 31st January. Author of The Greatest Gresham and other children's books. She was also an expert on children's lit and wrote about the history of girls' education. RIP.
