Seems that this series: Series: Companion Library, http://www.librarything.com/series/Companion%252BLibrary
should be moved to a publisher's series.

This one is either a publisher's series, or just a subject:

Did you mean to post this to the existing thread at https://www.librarything.com/topic/150442 ?

>1 al.vick: I agree with you. Presumably these are very condensed versions of the original works?
>2 al.vick: Not a publisher series for me - this sort of thing is best as a 'List'.

>5 Collectorator:
Doesn't that just mean they are a publisher series that have two works in each volume? I thought the defining characteristic of a 'true' series was that they were written to be part of a series. Of course none of these were.

I haven't separated and combined anything, just moved the series designation to a publisher's series.
>8 Crypto-Willobie: yes.

What myth? That Tom Sawyer was not written as part of a Companion Library? That there are books containing Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn that are not part of the "Companion Library"?

>7 Collectorator: >9 al.vick:
That publisher's series which is their new home is indeed now rather messed up. http://www.librarything.com/publisherseries/Companion+Library
The twofers that were in the now-moved series are mingled with single title volumes from another publisher. Perhaps those others belong in this series? http://www.librarything.com/publisherseries/Companion+Library+of+Classics
Or at keast the twofers and the singles need to be in two different serieses with distinguishing names

>10 Collectorator:
If you mean my comment in >8 Crypto-Willobie: concerning my understanding of the difference between the two different kinds of serieses, please specify how I am mistaken. As far as I can tell my understanding seems to be the common one, but I am willing to be group-corrected. And btw, watch yer fucking language.

>12 Crypto-Willobie: I just moved what was there. I guess there was already a series called "Companion Library"? Why would single volumes be in a series called
Companion Library? Well, if the single volumes should be separated out, there should be a new series name. Companion Library pairs? or some such? I can change these if that is what is desired.

>13 al.vick: Yeah there must have already been some other stuff under that name. Not sure what the correct name for the two-fer series would be. 'Grosset and Dunlap 2-in-1 Companion Library'? Or perhaps Collectorator has some input on the preferred title...

The phrase "Radio Boys" is used on a couple competing series. Some are by a particular "author" and one is by a publisher. To distinguish them I have used:

Radio Boys by Breckenridge
Radio Boys by Chapman
Radio Boys pub by Donohue

I note that the various Boy Scout series, often with different pseudonyms, authors, or publishers have a different notation that can also work:

Banner Boy Scouts
Boy Scouts \Payson\
Boy Scouts \Ralphson\
Boy Scouts \Scoville\

Here the names are pseudonyms or authors, not publishers. Banner Boy Scouts doesn't have an author indicated (Warren) because it is the only one with that name.

A possible name for the G&D Companion Library is:

Companion Library pub by G&D

As you have already discovered, these are pairs of stories, published in dos-a-do format, much like the Ace Science Fiction doubles but in hardcover.

It is likely that many of these are abridged to fit the age and format requirements. I don't know if the resulting texts are unique to this publisher library.

al.vick, Grosset & Dunlap had two publisher libraries called Famous Dog Stories and Famous Horse Stories. Virtually all of these are reprints of stories from other publishers. As such, they meet the LT definition of a Publisher Series. In the series book collecting field we call them "publisher libraries."

These are sections of my Series Book Encyclopedia draft. Looking at Famous Horse Stories, I am surprised that the authors are all in the first half of the alphabet.

I hope these are of some help.

So, James, when are we all going to get advance reader's copies of your Series Encyclopedia? ;D

For those who wish to join my editorial board and help correct it before it is published, I can share a PDF or can give a link to order an ARC from Lulu. Naturally I would do so only to those who agree to provide constructive feedback. Contact me privately about this.

This project began a long time ago. It is over 540 pages. Here's a Sample A Section.

al.vick, I agree with this. It fits the criteria on LT for a publisher series.

Just found this https://www.librarything.com/series/Little+Black+Classics. If someone has the time to move these, that would be appreciated!
