I have recently found two second-hand copies of Someone at a Distance. I haven't yet read it (but it's on the TBR pile). Any thoughts about why someone would abandon their copy?

They were sorely lacking in judgement. I've just finished this one and it is really very good. Her characterisation is superb.

I lent Someone at a Distance to a male friend of mine, happily married with kids, and he told me he couldn't get beyond the first 80 pages because the outcome of the novel was too painful for him to contemplate. Fair enough, so he gave me back my copy.

There's actually a great deal of hope at the end of it. I thought it was beautifully written.
