Monks and Pets

Those pictures make it clear why no cat could ever be a monk. No self-respecting cat would ever wear a robe.

Isn't there an old story about how a particular monk loved his pet cat, so when it wandered into the chapel during the liturgy it was allowed to sit by the altar? All the other monks got used to it, and when the cat died of old age they were happy for the pet-loving monk to get a new one to sit by the altar. Eventually the old monk died, but the other monks were happy to allow the cat to continue sitting by the altar, and when it died, they got a new one in memory of the beloved old monk. It became the norm for there to be a cat sitting by the altar. When it died it was again replaced. Over the years all the monks who remembered why there was a cat sitting by the altar also died, but still there was always a cat sitting by the altar. Hundreds of years later, it had been written into the rubrics that there must be a cat sitting by the altar during the liturgy, although nobody could say what was the theological or liturgical basis for this practice...
