What the pope should tell Jacob Rees-Mogg: ‘You ain’t no Catholic, bruv’ (Guardian)

Politicians use their faith to defend misogynist, homophobic views. Co-religionists shouldn’t let them get away with it

As far as I can recall JR-M was asked a fairly direct question and gave a straight reply. Tim Farron, as then leader of the Lib-Dems and mentioned in the article seemed to try to avoid this line of questioning ("weasely" if you like) until he realised his position was untenable. Nobody has to vote for either of them and in due course the electorate will have their say.

Reminds me of exchange between Pope Francis and candidate Trump:

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel," the Pope told journalists who asked his opinion on Trump's proposals to halt illegal immigration.

(Trump replied) "No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith" ...

God will have last word, though, as one wag suggested in a recent tweet ~

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, Trump called a National Day of Prayer and
attended Sunday service at St. John's Church, an Episcopal church near the White House.
God sent three more hurricanes.

State/Church relationships will always be a source of contention. Just read an article in Crisis which claims that Senator Bernie Sanders declared a nominee for federal office unfit because of his personal (Christian) beliefs. And Sen Diane Feinstein was quizzing a nominee federal judge, Amy Coney Barrett, about her personal beliefs.

>3 margd:: Should there be a "so" at the beginning of that last question?

If I'm not mistaken, PossMan, the "female" candidate for a judgeship declared that her religious beliefs tRUMP anything and everything that might be found in the US Constitution. Where do you stand on this issue?

>:5 Is the person you describe the Amy Coney Barrett referenced in my post (4)? If she was saying that she would not judge impartially according to the law then she probabably shouldn't be a candidate. I'm not clear why you put "female" in speech marks. Are you suggesting she's not a real woman.

PossMan .... You wrote: " ... declared a nominee for federal office unfit because of HIS personal (Christian) beliefs." (emphasis mine).

>7 Rood:: Aah yes. Sen. Sanders was questioning the fitness of a male nominee and Sen. Feinstein a female nominee. Perhaps I didn't make this clear although clicking the link and reading the target article should have helped.

A prayer that will get you fired as Congressional House Chaplain:

"May all Members be mindful that the institutions and structures of our great Nation guarantee the opportunities that have allowed some to achieve great success, while others continue to struggle," (Jesuit Patrick) Conroy said at the time. "May their efforts these days guarantee that there are not winners and losers under new tax laws, but benefits balanced and shared by all Americans."

Also, "Some of the more conservative evangelical Republicans didn't like that the Father had invited a Muslim person to give the opening prayer"

http://thehill.com/homenews/house/385035-house-chaplain-forced-out-by-ryan

...Sensitivities began to escalate as lawmakers talked about the type of replacement needed for Conroy. Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.), part of the group searching for the next chaplain, suggested someone “that has adult children, that kind of can connect with the bulk” of lawmakers and the problems they face with children who “made some bad decisions” or a spouse upset about the legislative schedule.

...That outraged some Catholics, who felt Walker was eliminating Catholic priests from consideration because of their vows of celibacy.

...Conroy is just the second Catholic priest to serve as House chaplain, after the Rev. Daniel P. Coughlin, who was chosen for the post in 2000 after a months-long protest by Catholic lawmakers...

In a reversal, Speaker Ryan says the House chaplain will remain in his post
Paul Kane | May 3, 2018

...(Rev Patrick J) Conroy, who was forced to step down by Ryan last month, sent the speaker a letter rescinding his resignation and vowing to remain until the end of the year. Within hours Ryan had backed down, ending the possibility of what the speaker feared would be a “protracted fight” over what is supposed to be a unifying and spiritual position in the partisan chamber.

...Congress is away on a one-week break, and some GOP advisers hoped the issue would die down amid the flurry of other news. But then Conroy issued a two-page letter* early Thursday accusing Ryan’s chief of staff, Jonathan Burks, of anti-Catholic bias.

...“I have never been disciplined, nor reprimanded, nor have I ever heard a complaint about my ministry during my time as House chaplain,” Conroy wrote Thursday.

...Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle questioned the timing of the decision and complained that Ryan had given only vague reasons for why Conroy was pushed out....
