I’m happy to say that it looks like there is definitely interest in continuing with the BingoDOG for 2018.
If you are wanting to contiribute to next year’s squares please send me 1-2 suggestions in a private message. I’ll keep the suggestion window open until after the CAT’s have been selected in case you’re wanting to suggest a square related to a CAT that didn’t get chosen.
Looking forward to seeing what great ideas you guys come up with for 2018!

Yay, the BingoDOG is returning! Thanks for taking this on, Stacy. I'll try to think of some good suggestions for squares....
3leslie.98
Yes, thanks for taking charge of this >1 LittleTaiko:! I will also try to think up some suggestions.
4LisaMorr
>1 LittleTaiko: Me three!

>1 LittleTaiko: Many thanks for setting this up. Especially if you get too many suggestions, are you planning to decide yourself (the usual practice) or have a discussion as we did for the Woman BingoPUP a couple of years ago? Also, if you are able to make for bingo cards, will you instruct some of us so that we will not need to depend upon one person in the future (plus be able to form our own bingo cards if we want to do so)? I notice that there are a number of instructions on the web for creating bingo cards, but they mostly are for printing out the cards instead of sharing them on a website and letting numerous people copy them as we do here.
Thanks again. I'm really looking forward to playing again next year.

Looking forward to everyone’s suggestions. I’ve already received some really good ones so far.
>5 sallylou61: - If for some reason I have too many suggestions, I may try to combine any that logically go together. If not, I’ll probably decide myself unless there are just too many to choose from and then open it up for a vote.
Yes, once I figure out the whole bingo card process I’ll be happy to share it with you guys so that anyone can create them going forward.

Thank you for setting this up, I'm really looking forward to another year of Bingo.
8LibraryCin
I'd love to make a suggestion, but I need to think about what suggestion to make. It would be nice to come up with something a bit different from what I've suggested before.
9LittleTaiko
>8 LibraryCin: - Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. There are still plenty of open squares to fill so feel free to send me a couple once you come up with them. I'm not finalizing anything until after the CAT's have been selected so you have a week or so to think of something new.

>9 LittleTaiko: Great! Thank you for the timeline! :-)
11LittleTaiko

Yay! Thank you for putting this together.
14sallylou61
Thanks. This BingoDOG looks more challenging than some of those in the past -- which will be fun.
16rabbitprincess
Awesome! I've started putting together my pool for books that would fit the ColourCAT and MysteryCAT and seeing how many of those books fit the squares :D
(what do you mean, I have books to read in 2017?)

>17 cmbohn: Cindy, you can choose how you would like to fill in your bingo card. Some of us go for the full card while others make Bingos by doing lines - horizontal, diagonal or vertical.
19rabbitprincess
>17 cmbohn: No, you don't have to :)
20VivienneR
>11 LittleTaiko: Terrific categories! This will be fun. Already I'm looking for titles. Thanks Stacy.
21cmbohn
That's a relief! I came up with a few now, but I don't want to get overwhelmed before I even start.
22dudes22
I was wondering what I'd do tonight while watching TV - now I'll update my 2018 spreadsheet and start looking for books.
23MissWatson
Oh, these look like fun! Some really imaginative challenges in there! Now I think I'm ready to finalise my own 2018 challlenge.
24Chrischi_HH
I forgot to send in a suggestion, but I can see it wasn't necessary anyway. Really great choices in my opinion! Can we now skip November and December to get started? Ok, just joking... ;)
26majkia
>24 Chrischi_HH: I know, right? I try to make fewer plans for the end of the year since I'm always more focused on the New Shiny Challenges than the last two months of the old ones!
28sushicat
So nice to see some really different topics - I specially hate "books recommended by your mother" (no mother in my life anymore) and "author sharing your initials" (my initials are very difficult to match).
29VivienneR
>28 sushicat: I agree. An author sharing my initials was the hardest one I ever had to find.

>11 LittleTaiko: If you are going to have 1001 list as a square, I think there needs to be a link if this is a specific 1001. Personally, I could very easily come up with my own 1001!

>32 cyderry: Yeah, me too.
34LisaMorr

36LisaMorr

Thank you for the links. I've started working on the cards and hope to have them by next weekend at the latest.

All comments as to the wonderfulness of the cards should be directed LittleTaiko who actually made them. I just uploaded them to my server, and posted the links.
...It is really cool for me that that little bingo marker web-utility program I coded four or five years ago is still being used, though. :)

Thank you both for the bingo cards. I can't wait to start filling the slots.
58RidgewayGirl
Thank you both for making the BingoDOG possible this year!
62LittleTaiko
You all are quite welcome! To be fair, my husband created the backgrounds as he speaks the tech language better than I do. My job was filling in the squares which was way harder than I thought it would be. :) Now I have the hang of it though and should be able to do these much faster in the future.
64sallylou61
Who suggested the square "Money in the title - any form of currency, type of payment, etc..."? Would How Not to Get Rich: The Financial Misadventures of Mark Twain count? Financial misadventures certainly implies money; the book is about Mark Twain and money.
65MissWatson
>64 sallylou61: It was me and I would say it counts, because this is definitely about money.
66sallylou61
>65 MissWatson: . Thanks, I will count it. I've just finished reading this book which my husband got us (from our cats!) for our wedding anniversary. I was amazed to read how often and far Twain kept getting into debt sometimes for an invention which did not pan out. He finally got a robber baron who liked his writing to manage his business affairs.
67virginiahomeschooler
>65 MissWatson: I have a question about the money one as well. Does the money word actually have to mean money in the title or does it just need to be a word that could mean money? For example, if I found a biography on Johnny Cash (I have no desire to read such a book, just thinking here) or something like Cookie Dough or Die, would that work?
68LibraryCin
>67 virginiahomeschooler: I'd use something like that!
69LittleTaiko
>67 virginiahomeschooler: - Yes, the intent with this one was that anything money related could be used - cash, penny, nickel, dough,etc...
70virginiahomeschooler
>68 LibraryCin: & >69 LittleTaiko: Great, thanks!
71dudes22
>67 virginiahomeschooler: - I used one with "fortune" in the title.
72MissWatson
>67 virginiahomeschooler: Yes, of course that was also intended, just as rich and poor would also count.
73sallylou61
What is the definition of relative name in title? Can it just mean the word for a relative or must a name be attached? Over the weekend I read Sisters First: Stories from Our Wild and Wonderful Life by Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush. Would this qualify? It is obvious that the title is referring to the Bush twins although it does not read Sister Jenna and Sister Barbara.
74LittleTaiko
It's my understanding it would be just the word for relative such as sister, aunt, uncle, cousin, etc...No need to include the actual name in the title.
75sallylou61
>74 LittleTaiko: Thanks, I've used it.
76LibraryCin
"Title contains name of a famous person" - could a (music) group count for this? Or do we want to be more specific to a person?
77virginiahomeschooler
Wife would count as a relative, right? I feel like I have "wife" books coming out my ears.
78LittleTaiko
>76 LibraryCin: - I think a music group would work just fine for that square.
>77 virginiahomeschooler: - Yes, a wife or husband would definitely count as a relative.
>77 virginiahomeschooler: - Yes, a wife or husband would definitely count as a relative.

>80 LadyoftheLodge:, Congratulations. I think I have 4 left counting the middle square and I am finding this a hard one to complete.

I have a question about the "fits at least two KITS/CATS." For this book, does it have to fit the KIT and CAT in the same month. And the "two" means one KIT and one CAT, right?
Asking for a friend....
Asking for a friend....
90LibraryCin
>89 witchyrichy: I took it to mean in the same month.
I assumed it meant either 2 CATs, 2 KITs, or 1 CAT and 1 KIT.

91Helenliz
>89 witchyrichy: I read it the same way as >90 LibraryCin:.
That's not to say that's the only possible reading of it, of course.

I started a new topic for June: https://www.librarything.com/topic/292012
95BookConcierge
So, I've just joined the group and I have to say that i'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Might just observe for a few months to see if I get the hang of things, and jump into the challenges for 2019 and later. (And I DO realize there will be a new group set up for 2019, 2020, etc).
One thing that would be helpful is some sort of explanation for each of the CATs and KITs.
For example, I was looking at AlphaKIT .... and then I looked at the AlphaKIT wiki .... SO I'm guessing that I can find the month's letters in ANY word in the title, or the author's initials. But I don't find an actual explanation anywhere. So could I use author last name sancheZ for 'Z'? Or would that last name only count for 'S'? Seems that I could use a word in the title that begins with a 'Z' no matter whether it's the first word of the title or not (e.g. "The Tower, The Zoo, and the Tortoise") ... but what about a word in the title that includes a letter 'Z' even if it's not the first letter of that word? (e.g. "Blue HoriZon")?

>95 BookConcierge: Hi, and welcome to the group! It is perfectly OK to observe and get the hang of things. That is how a lot of us got started :)
For the AlphaKIT, from what I've seen, people normally use the first letter of a word in the title or of the author's initials. I'm not saying they *couldn't* use letters that appear in other places in a word, but it might be more of a last resort, especially for those pesky Q's, X's and Z's.
As for the other KITs and CATS, each one has a specific theme and different topics each month that fit the theme (for example, with the MysteryCAT, each month features a different type of mystery novel). The person hosting the monthly topic will explain what the topic covers and suggest some books that would fit the parameters of the topic. If you have a book that seems like it might fit but you're not sure, just ask and we'll help you figure it out. (Usually the answer is yes.)
If you have particular questions about a given KIT or CAT, let us know! You can post on that KIT's or CAT's main thread (as seen on the main group page) or on the current topic, and someone will be by to help you out :)

>95 BookConcierge: Welcome, BookConcierge, I hope you soon feel at home. Take your time looking around. The main thing about the CATs, KITs and BingoDog is that they're optional. Some of the people who have been doing the Category Challenge for years, who never participate in these side challenges, there are a few who manage to follow several every single month, and most people dip in and out of them as they find books, or when they need a little inspiration on what to read next.
So take a look at the side challenges and feel free to jump into the ones that interest you as often or infrequently as you want and ignore the ones that don't.
And as for which books qualify for any given challenge -- that's entirely up to you. Just as each person designs their own category challenge each year, with categories and numbers you choose to suit yourself - either to push yourself into new areas or simply to have a fun way to keep track of your reading. If you want to join the AlphaKIT and count any letter appearing on the front cover, you can do that. If you only want to count the first letter of the first word in the title, that's also fine. The other side challenges are likewise up to you to decide how stringent or relaxed you want to be about them.
I hope you'll eventually set up your own thread (either this year, or next year) and let us see what you're reading!

>95 BookConcierge: Hi, BC! Thanks for giving it a try! There is a lot going on here, and I started off slowly, as well, just following along to see how it worked. You could always choose ONE of the challenges to try for the rest of this year, if you'd like.
PM (on any platform we are connected!) or email me if you want more help behind the scenes. :-)

100cyderry
I just realized that no matter how many books I read this year, I will not fill my card - there are several blocks I just will not read because they don't interest me and since I have so many books I want to read, it won't happen. I enjoy the bingo card but if the selections next year are again a bit political and off the wall, I won't be playing along.
101RidgewayGirl
>100 cyderry: I haven't found a money title yet, either, but isn't the fun in the challenge of trying?
102katiekrug
>100 cyderry: - I'm interested in which you find political, as I didn't interpret any of them that way. Perhaps sharing which are frustrating or challenging would allow other bingo players to make suggestions?
I only have 8 squares left to fill, but even with that many completed, I still haven't gotten an actual Bingo!

For the Pacific Ocean prompt, I might also read The People in the Trees by Hanya Yanagihara. It sounds like a difficult but worthwhile read....

I have a BINGO across, but the squares get harder and harder to fill as the year progresses...we'll see!
