What did You buy today? - October 2017

I didn't see a thread yet, so here goes. I made it to the Friends of the Library sale and came away with 33 books or $49. More than half hardbacks, some of which were slipcased. Here's a sampling : Eula Mae's Cajun Kitchen, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Let the Great World Spin and Miracle at Philadelphia.

Only have the 4th book you named, but want to read the second. A manager new to our bookstore but not new to books loves that one. She's a big fantasy fan and one of the few bright spots on the management staff....

So I bought a couple of books on Friday, and picked up an ARC, too. The ARC, due out in early October, was Timeless: Diego & the Rangers of the Vastlantic by Armand Baltazar. It's juvenile fiction, fantasy I think, although I haven't looked at it that closely and it could be SF or some blending or ....

The two I bought:

* Beauty Like the Night by Joanna Bourne (historical romance; I've heard good things about her and have bought others of her books but have yet to read her)

* Rising Above a Toxic Workplace: Taking Care of Yourself in an Unhealthy Environment by Gary Chapman, Paul White, & Harold Myra (yeah, it's bad; not as entirely bad nor in the same way as under other managers, but it's not good)

Two more ARCs, and a purchase. Could not resist the purchase, but now it'll be weeks before I have a paycheck with any "spare" cash in it....

The ARCs:

* _Tomorrow_ by Damian Dibben (pub 3/18; historical fiction/fantasy about a dog 217 years old)

* The Trick by Emanuel Bergmann (pub 9/17; this had been on the ARC table for a while, I finally took it because it reminded me a bit in description of The Elegance of the Hedgehog, which I bought quite a while back but have not yet read)

And the purchase, despite the fact I know my library system has it...

* A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived: The Human Story Retold Through Our Genes by Adam Rutherford
