I stumbled across Unwritten at a book signing in Asheville, North Carolina. After speaking to the author, M.C. Henson, who is a woman, I was struck regarding her sense of emotional characterization and charged military drama. After eagerly devouring the book in one night, yes, I stayed up all night reading it, I am impatiently awaiting the sequel.
I've read Tom Clancy. I like John Grisham. I also like Don Brown. Characterization sells me every time. I felt like I really knew who these people were in the book- Caroline Blaine and David Reese. (David is apparently patterned after David James Elliott, who most of you know as Harmon Rabb, Jr.) The plot was not apparent from the first page, nor was it by the middle. Henson manages to hold your attention, but delivers on plot promises. Even with a romantic undertone, it more than satisfies your need for military action. You cheer for the characters at each challenge they overcome. Most military novels are about men.
Men account for most of the military force. However, Henson takes a different approach. Her main character is a woman- a Naval Intelligence Agent and aviator. And she pulls it off brilliantly!
I wasn't all too familiar with Navy terms, even though I tuned in for J.A.G every week on CBS. Henson has a glossary at the front of the book, and even more extensive jargon online. I've sure learned a lot! I will have to say that her website is a gem.
