Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors:
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post:
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page:
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

1. It’s not spam. Authors can post that sort of thing on their personal profile pages.

2. It is not possible to flag images in a member’s gallery.

It's just too much nowadays, and I'm very sure that Lorannen (and other staff folks) do not read this thread on a regular basis. Sorry for the stubborn profiles, folks. Due to some lingering issues after the Great Downtime of April 2018 (discussion of those issues here), we had to temporarily shut off the process that applies the "provisional spam" account status. Devs are discussing whether there's a way to leave that on while still doing the necessary work. In the meantime, I'm checking accounts flagged as spam periodically throughout the day to knock them down manually.

All the other flagging (including that fake book above) seems to be working, and profiles flagged ages ago seem to be suspended now. It's still worth flagging them. Sooner or later the system will catch up.

I agree that this case can be in the gray areas. It is fine to review one's own books. For me, it's the profile that tips the scale, with its three links. Also, the book has no info besides the title and the author, which seems awfully minimal.

On the other hand, I am extra skeptical this week, having looked through so many profiles in search of spam. I'll try to be more conservative, as yes it's more important to preserve (er, not certain what adjective to use) works than it is to mark them as spam by mistake.

Abr 17, 2018, 7:13 pm

I wonder, is there any way that LT staff could check to see if the same person created a profile and a work? I have no idea; it just occurred to me to ask. (Because staff already don't have enough to do! AS IF.)

Abr 17, 2018, 10:23 pm

>112 karenb:

I wonder, is there any way that LT staff could check to see if the same person created a profile and a work?

I'm not sure I see why that would be at all helpful. After all, a lot of authors join the site and are the only member to list their book(s), but that's perfectly permissible. So the fact that the same person created a profile and a work doesn't say anything about whether it's a spam work or spam account.

Abr 18, 2018, 4:28 am

>113 lilithcat:

So the fact that the same person created a profile and a work doesn't say anything about whether it's a spam work or spam account.

Indeed. I was thinking more when one piece is borderline spam, looking at the other piece could help clarify the matter. While this wouldn't help with >104 karenb:, it could help in other cases. Some newer spam seems less blatant and thus harder to detect.

Abr 19, 2018, 7:54 am

This supplements company is getting annoying

Abr 21, 2018, 12:42 pm

I think this may fall into the Enthusiastic Authors realm, but I have only enough skills in Espanol to communicate the most basic of messages, and even my Latin skills are too rusty for this one.

I noticed an item in the spam folder that didn't seem to belong, and looked more closely. I've removed it, and it appears to be a review of a book. Maybe. I note that MarthaJeanne has left a brief comment on the author's profile. I'd leave my normal message, but it's in English, and that would seem both rude and pointless.

Please do not flag any of this.

In addition, the author page seems terribly messed up.

(There's the suggestion of two authors with that name, and a disambiguation page, but I suspect it's the same person.)

Spam Fighters is probably (almost certainly) the wrong place for this, but I suspect it's the place most likely to catch the attention of someone who is willing to fix it, and (more importantly) may possess the language skills to do so.

Not that I am aware of. It's not very active, but it appears to be a forum for talking about ebooks and letting others know where you can find them. Looking at a few of the threads, I do see flags on some that are blatant advertising for the poster's own books, so I'm guessing that's not welcome.

If someone wants to undertake a translation of my message, feel free. His stated home is in Venezuela, so Spanish is the correct one.

Spam published reviews on "1984": (this account has a profile badge for adding published reviews, YIKES)

Maio 16, 2018, 11:37 am

Should I be deleting these published reviews as well, or is having them disappear when the spammer is removed sufficient?

four works from spam user who links to each of the four subjects (please do not mark user as spam, yet):

PC store:
a laptop:

This user (andreagrace) is not to be confused with the author assigned to the works (graceandrea), who has real works in addition to these fake ones.

>208 karenb: You had no space on the last one (although I suppose folks are smart enough to figure it out).

I flagged the profile. I'm heartless. She's also from 2012, and I'm sure long gone.

Maio 18, 2018, 1:43 am

>210 Lyndatrue: Ah! Fixed.
Yeah, I just wanted to make sure the works were flagged first. Thanks!

And now, a bedbugs "pamphlet," with cover apparently adapted from a murder mystery (dead human! I had no idea that bedbugs could kill us):

Maio 18, 2018, 5:10 am

>213 karenb:. Those who are voting No, take a look at the review.

Editado: Maio 18, 2018, 5:17 am

>214 2wonderY: I voted yes but technically the item does exist on Amazon and could be added to a library at least for now, even if it is obviously a scamphlet with another SEO/spammy review over there.

Maio 18, 2018, 5:32 am

>214 2wonderY: The review then is flaggable, but the pamphlet is not, as it does come up in an amazon search... Much as I'd love to flag it all to oblivion.

Maio 18, 2018, 11:01 am

>216 gilroy: OK, I admit that I did not check Amazon to verify the pamphlet's existence, assuming from the review that it was fake. I'm sorry; I'll remember to do that next time.

Maio 18, 2018, 11:55 am

>217 karenb: No problem. Maybe we'll go back and flag it to oblivion in a week or two when Amazon changes their mind on the pamphlet. :)

Editado: Maio 18, 2018, 12:49 pm

>219 Taphophile13: You know, that's the sort of thing I might alert staff to, rather than just flagging. I'm about to flag all three profiles of the group, listed below. (please note he's a member of two other, legitimate groups, and may be posting there as well)

ETA: This seems like a repeat performance by "tywan" (who I'm beginning to really dislike).

Maio 18, 2018, 1:01 pm

>220 Lyndatrue: The profiles have already been suspended although the group is still present with three flags.

Maio 18, 2018, 3:28 pm

I have a suspicion about this one...

Currently, it's just borderline, but I'm betting it won't be for long.

(There's also this, which I saw first.)

Maio 21, 2018, 4:03 pm

>215 Jarandel: et al

Amazon has been Spammed before. I could show you tons.

Maio 21, 2018, 9:12 pm

Touting his honorable mention at book festival:

Don't flag profile:
I left a message for him.

I found this one waiting to be squashed in the "Spam?" threads so even long time members can run afoul of the algorithm. Doesn't hurt to check there once in a while.

Editado: Maio 22, 2018, 1:27 am

My spider sense is burning my brain on these two (which I strongly believe are the same person, or at least people who know each other).

Those two wretched, all caps random nonsense topics were posted ten minutes apart. Note that they have exactly the same two books in their respective libraries.

I've already had a long day, and right now, I just want to get out the bug spray and be done with these two. I will leave it to others to decide what to do (if anything). I just think it's about to lead in to something...

ETA: I'm apparently not alone. The DenasBeat topic is gone, already, and the account's suspended.

Editado: Maio 22, 2018, 11:04 am

...and they're back. Here's the topic. I'll be back with profiles in a bit.

Only four of them, and none actually containing the tyan (or whatever it was) creature.

The jahsavage one has four books, so it'll be tougher to flag.

Ugh. It just keeps getting worse. Here's the group.

Editado: Maio 22, 2018, 11:50 am

>232 Lyndatrue: In addition, there's this one (most of the above have been suspended, but the group needs flagging). (I note he left his "real" name of tywan rodriguez)

There is also a private group, now.

I don't know that I'd normally care, but these creatures seem to have a lot of free time.

only Google translated one of them and it was for diploma sample certificates.

Although he does have some real books in his library, a review tranlates as:

Maio 22, 2018, 2:08 pm

I have to admit that this is all starting to beat me down. I'm not sure what the solution is, here, other than changing the rules on new users, and who can make groups, and other restrictive things that will all server to make LT less than it is.

Yet again, the tragedy of the commons rears its ugly head.

>242 Lyndatrue: The only other thing is TPTB start blocking IP addresses of the culprits, since they seem to be a group. Still saying they're underage, but it's possible they're 13 and have the mentality of a 10 year old.

ETA: Any reason to believe isn't also part of the crew?

Editado: Maio 22, 2018, 3:32 pm

I'm more of an opinion that we're being overly harsh. Any messages using inappropriate language should certainly be flagged to oblivion, and any account continuing to do so should be flagged, but I don't think creating a private group for talking to one's friends is inherently against the terms of service. (Though now that all the profiles are removed, it is impossible for me to tell what accounts were guilty of what.)

Has anyone explained to any of these people why they keep being removed? I tried to leave a profile message for one but the account was removed before I could post.

>243 gilroy: I don't see what they've done wrong? They created a redundant group but people do that all the time and that's not a flaggable offense.
